watchman 256
sorry to hear that mate but you got to face facts,if amputation is the only way,and its a working dog,you only have one choice imo,put to sleep, sorry pal but thats how it is,nature of the game,do the right thing mate Quote Link to post
budharley 945
i no pal but im heart broken Quote Link to post
reddog70 236
if you can get the money together mate i would get it done your obvously attached. you might just have to do a bit more ferreting and mouching with him keep the four legs what ever you do all the best Quote Link to post
TAXI DRIVER 549
Sorry to hear your bad news.If the break`s as bad as that and the vet is sure he`ll never work again then I`d put him to sleep if I was in your situation. The dog is a working dog that loves to work and would be gutted sitting in his kennel disabled and unable to work etc. Quote Link to post
budharley 945
i havnt got the 900 needed for plate pal and up 2 2000 2 3000 on how bad it is i can just about get the 300 needed for amputation if i go amputation he gne be stuck in his kennel al day while im at work and not get worked in evening or weekend Quote Link to post

arcticgun 4,548
A friend of mine faced the same dilemma on xmas eve, you should get the dog PTS asap mate, it really is the sensible option on all fronts, the plate op comes with no guarentee at all, the amputation is not fair on the dog imho, its a hard descision to make and I don't envy you making it, get itt done and move on as others have said it happens in the working dog game, my thoughts are with you atvb Richard Quote Link to post
TAXI DRIVER 549
Your family comes first.Your dog should fit into your lifestyle. In your case this won`t happen if you keep the dog.I`ve been there myself and it hurts at the time but in a couple of months you`ll know it was the right decision. reddog70 236
real hard decision for you mate guess he could just about get on with three legs dogs adapt well theres a boxer where i walk shoots about on three and if you did rehome him to a pet home after you got all summer to find him a suitable one and get yourself another ps i think theres was someone on here who works a three legged whippet with some success best of luck with what ever you do Quote Link to post
budharley 945
im f****n gutted maybe this game not for me thats what i feel like Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
a real bad situation bud i feel sorry for you both. these knocks can make you doubt you are doing the right thing,i'm sure you are. if you enjoy the lamping/ferreting and just being with the dogs outside then the game is right for you bud. if you decide to amputate then be aware of the consequences later, one leg will be doing the work of both and will wear out quicker. i'm sure the dog will get on ok and enjoy his work but will probably be retired quicker. the after operation care can be quite expensive too. as far as plating goes i have no personal experiance but i know that these thing can take a long time to sort out and not always with the best outcome. its a hard nut to crack bud but if you can't keep him as a pet then it may be best to pts( rehoming a three legged dog will not be easy unless you know someone who would take him already?). keep your chin up mate. waidmann Quote Link to post
Casso 1,261
Hold on to your dog bud, some of those mutts just get under your skin,if you dont think this game is for you ,keep the dog.. Quote Link to post
Malt 379
I'm gutted for you mate. My mooching buddy had the same sort of thing happen to him last year. Some young kid opened a gate to speak to the dog, and she ran into the road, got ran over and broke both her front legs. The vet told him that she'd never work again due to the severity of the breaks, so it was either pay thousands out in ops for a lame pet dog, or have her PTS. It was the hardest thing he'd ever had to do, broke his heart, but 12 months on her replacement is starting to come into her own and has helped to ease the pain a bit. I know it sounds a bit callous, but it's like riding a horse. You fall off, you get straight back in the saddle before the shock hits you and things tend to work out. ATB whatever you decide.
