polecat93 4 Posted March 3, 2010 Report Share Posted March 3, 2010 (edited) my mate has a whippet and basically all it has done has beenlamping and is starting to get really interested in rabbits and has actually caught a couple aswell , the whippet is about a year old and one of my ferrets is 2 , and 2 are about 10 month old and was just wondering if its to late to train them to get along, also if any advice on how to train them to like each other would be apprecated as we would love it to beable to come ferreting. Jamie m 668 Posted March 3, 2010 Report Share Posted March 3, 2010 (edited) yes can be done you will probally get a few replies saying diferent thingsbut im also braking dogs to ferrets , and as someone said breaking ferrets to dogs more the point. yes would be best when both are young , gradually slowly bit at a time one bloke said to me house them together in the shed they will soon get bored of each other .obviosly not running free and dont trust em when your not there , we broke our lurcher to the tortoise the other day but they dont move that fast at this time of year unlike a ferret Edited March 3, 2010 by Jamie m Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216 Posted March 3, 2010 Report Share Posted March 3, 2010 Like longdog said - being kept around each other really helps, they get used to each other moving about, their smell and sound. Obviosuly you cant keep them 'together' but they can be caged next to each other etc. Also they should be introduced in a safe space . . . . taking the dog to the ferrets cage , , , , watch what it does and reward/reprimand it accordingly. The problem is the dog mainly, i introduced three ferrets, 1 8mnth and 2 2yrs to dogs recently when out ferreting and they pretty much ignored them. A dog however that has not met a ferret may lunge out of instinct. The key to how to break a dog that is older to ferrets is in a word - SLOWLY! atb Jai. Quote Link to post

polecat93 4 Posted March 3, 2010 Author Report Share Posted March 3, 2010 (edited) once they did meet and the dog was sniffin the ferret and the ferret went for the dog and the dog crapped itself, i dont think the dog will go for them because it is quit soft and lives with really small dogs i think its just the ferrets who need to like the dog but i will try and get them together more often and useto each other cheers for the advice polecat93 Edited March 3, 2010 by polecat93 Quote Link to post
