we all no that swimming is good for us and dogs but how much would be right

my dogs swim 4 fun in the summer if I go up the river when its hot you can guarantee they are in before me they love it!!!!but I honestly wouldn't know how much is too much!!!they are always first in last out!!!be good thread to follow!!!atb

My bitch will swim all year round, she never tires of it and will happily follow me on the lake whilst i row for 40 mins to an hour . . . . . . that said she is very fit and has done this since a puppy. I would recommend treating it like any other exercise, when the dog starts to show signs of tiring, i.e, panting, heaving sides etc . . . give it a break or stop. Most dogs i think would happily swim for half an hour after a ball, retrieving. If i'm using swimming to condition my bitch, then i take her to the river at a very fast flowing point and get her to swim against the current . . . . obviously this is much harder work than a still lake and 5 min bursts is more than enough.

swam my greyhound leading up to the welsh derby and overdid it and he didnt lift a leg lost to greyhounds that genuingly couldnt live with my boy. swam him in a spa with a pump to rush the current against him 10 minutes and he was knackered.

My dog genuinly can't swim he goes as far as his feet can touch the ground and that's it!!! He likes water but dosent like swimming he makes a right drama out of it!!!

Could be to do with the fact that as a pup he was flying around in the woods and there was a still pond coverd in green little pond weeds(wich I must admit did look solid to the untrained eye) well I'm sure you can guess what happened next! He walked on water for a milliesecond!! Funniest thing I've ever seen!!

my three swim at the beach in hot weather,I go right out by hilbery island,sometimes the grey seals come over and take a look at us,the first time one popped its head up by me I sh*t myself,the dog's don't know what to make of them,they don't get out the water to the dog's but I don't know what would happen if they did,I'm sure something would be illegal,my two lurcher's both swim or lie down in any water they can get in,especially after a hard run on something,all exercise is good in moderation and swimming is just another form of it,it is especially good as a non load bearing exercise after injury to a leg or joint,wirralman

doesn't matter to mine if it's summer or not they just swim the rivers/streams when they want, couple of weeks back there was 2ft of snow and the dog's were still in the steams .

do u think it help's with staminer see what i do not whant to do is cause any musel bound or tightings witch my friend did to his tidy little bitch she was so tight he could only walk 100 yard's then carry her home she is now five and is still no better

the good thing about swimming is that the joints don't suffer.its hard to tear muscles etc.

thats why its used as rehabilitation after operations etc.

as long as the dog is enjoying it and isn't trying to get out then you should be fine.

yes as a pup she was not like the rest of litter see ther was five pups one died so the rest where spred out betwean mate's by 6 months thay where 19 to 22 inches but the bitch was not like the three dogs thay where muscely alround then at 18 months thay where all solid but the bitch flat in her legs hardly no muscel he was all ready walking her with other dogs so the summer came and he started swimming her he likes it himsalfe but i notise he was doing it every late afternoon for about three qurters of an houer i said that not to over do it but in a way im not suer if he did thats why im asking thank's

THERE ARE 2 GREYHOUND SPA,S NEAR 2 ME & IVE FOUND THEY EITHER TAKE 2 IT OR THEY DONT.MY OLDER BITCH HATES IT & IT DOES HER MORE HARM THAN GOOD. 5 TO 10 MINS TWICE A WEEK WILL KEEP YOUR DOG TICKING OVER,BUT THEIR IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR RUNNING A WORKING DOG 2 GET IT FIT. BUT IF U & UR DOGS LIKE GETTING IN 4 A SWIM DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS THEN ITS ALL GOOD FUN & BUILDS THE BOND BETWEEN U & UR DOG AS WELL ID SAY.CERTAINLY BETTER THAN LYING AROUND A KENNEL ALL SUMMER.
