scotty2306 37
i would imagine every dog will cock/jack at some point surely they all have a limit just some more than others so at what point does it become a cocker/jacker is it if you run lots of rabbit or hare (p b)and they get tired and cant run anymore?what happens if they do it when they have caught a decent bag is this excepted? Endgame 68
when you have a dog that jacks you will no all about it. I AGREE. THAT SINKING FEELING WHEN U KNOW UR DOG HAS PLENTY PETROL IN THE TANK BUT WHEELS OFF. YOU KNOW IT AINT AN INJURY, SO IS IT UR FAULT 4 GIVING IT 2 MUCH 2 EARLY?? ANY NUMBER OF REASONS THAT YOU HAVE 2 ASK YOURSELF IF THE BLAME IS YOURS?? OR IS THE DOG JUST NOT UP 2 IT? DOES IT WANT ITS QUARRY BAD ENOUGH?? EITHER WAY YOU WILL KNOW IT WHEN U SEE IT. Richie10 345
Is he a jacker if the quarry out runs him gives up? As the dog recognises he doesn't have the speed? Quote Link to post
sandymere 8,263
Jacking means the dog has been asked to give what it hasn't got, that may be either physical or psychological reason or a bit of both. I had in the bitch in the 's that ran a good hare at the beging of the seasan and lost it in a wood, flushed another on the way back with another long run the hare got through the fence and the dog didn't try the jump. It jacked but had to be carried home and was a few weeks recivering but by the end of the winter was properly fit and running strong. never jacked again. So maybe the term jacking is a simple way to describe what is usually a very complex situation. Quote Link to post
Dan Edwards 1,134
All dogs will quit. If you dont believe me, come over for a visit and I will make you a believer in short order. I wouldnt get to worried about it if your dog jacks a time or two. If they are worth feedin, they will come out of it and be better for it. If they dont come out of it, it just werent meant to be. Some of these rabbits have some sharp ol claws you know fella ...But seriously mate a jacker is a term used for a dog that leaves/stops chasing its quarry of its own accord and without injury.I.e if it can see it and it has chased it then it should still be chasisng it even if it's being outrun. If a fen dog gives up on a hare still in veiw that its been sliped upon then it could be called a jacker. If a rabbit lamping dog turns away from them (often down to silly slips or to many runs)it also could be called a jacker. Unfortunatly in running dogs there are a lot more situations/reasons for jacking than punishment from the quarry. ATB Quote Link to post
