worked borders and lakelands before i got more into lurchers and havnt had terriers since then about 10 years, last year decided to get a patterdale pup(old nuttal lines)when i got her she looked like a mini pit bull now shes quite small shes 11 month now,all she wants to do is scream at anything moving and lock on if she gets chance, dogs horses anything even tried to get stuck into a mini digger one day, shes had about 6 rats which she crunches no shaking, shes very hard biting for a small dog,now to the problem she does not seem interested in hunting up or going to ground only scrapping and being an idiot,i no shes to young for groundwork i mean just running through pipes and little sets, ive given up just about and now shes become my housepet,is this common with patts as its the first ive had and never seen any others working,i dont have another terrier to show her the ropes any advice, :( never had trouble entering any other dog 30 year of hunting some have been not the best im honest,am i going to have to buy a lakeland pup this summer or will she settle down?

She will hopefully settle down with time, experience and age.

hope so ive gone grey since i got her, just hope she doesnt get smashed and cock off if she ever decides to graft, plenty for her if she settles down, pal has lined a lakie bitch with his old dog its about 12 and still working so im tempted but i just wanted a little dog for going out with the lurchers and the odd dig and ratting, cheers marra

this seems to be misplaced agression.

i take it she was brought up with other dogs?

has she seen a shot fox? this would be the first thing i would get her on.

get her running concrete pipes through and or small earths.

mine self entered at the we whil bushing.he bumped a fox in the brambles and chased to ground (prt 10 1/2 months)he has been going to ground for a while but not found(luckily)but did ok and bolted the fox again.

try to get a digging dog to show her if at all possible

good luck

yes shes been brought up around other dogs, all bigger than her so it might be napolion syndrome, shes been out with my lurchers once and never again a whole afternoon of screaming and chasing bullxs about clouted her repeatedly no joy saw nothing cos of her,she was never meant to be a seriouse earthdog just a semi pet,ive shown her bits and pieses that ive shot no fear in her just no hunting instict, and the only lad i no that has working terriers isnt keen to take her along for noise and scrapping on,maybe the penny will drop or il have a breakdown, also is it common for a jet black pup to go coppery chocolate as mine has, cheers

I doubt when the penny drops this bitch wont work,as you say mate she will probably get stuck in and get a mauling, ive been in the same situation myself with the gamest bitch ive ever seen.

The only way forward will probably be "shit or bust" its risky but when she does start working and gets mauled dont let her heal fully before the next dig[i dont mean stupidly smashed] but work her while shes still a bit sore and keep this up,she could jack, she could die or hopefully she could see sense, the worst course of action is to let her heal and fully recover between digs.

I did this with my bitch and it did work to a large extent, but any long lay offs [having a litter for eg]and she did tend to get stuck in a bit for the first few digs but then settled again,if you only have the occasional dig with her i doubt she will ever be a sensible worker? But at the end of the day theres only one way to find out, some dogs arent as daft when to ground as you think they will be.

Good luck.
