Nik_B 3,790
I decided to take my 4 month old black Lab fishing to get him used to being out with me and for some company. As I aim to use him as a gun dog should I keep him on a peg next to me or is it ok to let him roam around? I started out with him on a short lead on a screw in peg but he whined and I let him off for the whole day. He was very good and just pottered about looking around the rabbit warrens. When I see people use their labs for shooting it seems to me like they have to sit still next to the owner for ages at a time. So can I gain something from taking him fishing and should I let him roam about or try to get him used to sitting next to me? Quote Link to post

Catcher 1 639
I used to take my springer fishing with me.At fist it would dive in when it seen the splash as the bait hit the water When i put a stop to that.It started having a go at the pike as i was landing them.Thank god i was the only one that did that part of the loch. One day i lost a small pair of sisers i had for ages.Fishing the same place three days later sitting on my chair daydreaming.the dog came over sat down in front of me and had them in its mouth. My scent must have still been on them. Nik_B 3,790
Westlow was mega busy today and while he's ok to potter around I didn't want to get in trouble with any other fishermen so I kept him on a 12m cable tied to a screw post. He was pretty much ok but whined a bit and tried to look all sad, then he found aload of bones to munch on. For the second time in two weeks he refused to leave and I virtually had to drag him by the lead with all my gear. I guess he loves it or just hates my car Cheers for the replies, I'm not sure when I should try to get him used to sitting still next to me for longer periods of time. Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
take him a bone or hide chew with you and let him have that at the peg.it will keep him busy and get him tired if you have a pocket full of dry food you can work on sit,lie down etc while you have the time together, that will keep him busy and at your peg.the best thing is to spend as much time with a pup as possible(preferably out of the house) so you have a good start there. later you can start the dummy training while out(you may be advised to throw it in someone elses swim for the water work ). i'm sure he will do well. atb Quote Link to post
