Advice on Rifle

Hi,

 

I have recently joined the forum and getting into hunting. I fish alot but Havn't been shooting since I was a child and for the sort of Hunting i'll be doing an Air rifle seems ideal. I have a farm to shoot on and a friend who has also recently started.

 

Anyway i'll get to the point a friend has an air rifle that was lying in his barn goijg to waste. It's a Weirauch HW86k (.22 I believe), it's in a bit of a state but i've been told it fires ok. Is this a good gun and would it be ideal for me as a beginner? Also the whole .177 .22 confuses me as everyone has different views on what to get.

wierauchs are bomb-proof,I shoot centre-fire now but still couldn't bring myself to part with my hw80 had it over 25yrs still as good as ever it was give or take a couple of springs & a custom stock.they are very easy to work on as well for a beginner.

That sounds good then. The only worry is the state it's in the barrell has rust all over it. Are they easy to clean up. The sights look ok though.

I agree, grab it and it should do every thing you want it to. Rust outside the barrel, looks bad but it won't affect the guns performance. Rust inside the barrel will be blown out with the first pellet. Some gun oil and a rag always makes a rusty old gun look better, and if its real bad, use a bit of very fine wire wool and gun oil to take off the roughness (Take off as little as you can get away with). Then start on a few targets and take it from there.

Ah I got it wrong it's a Weihrauch HW80k. Theres no silencer but I assume they are easy to fit.

Sweet gun mate! Awesome find in the shed! My HW77k had a bit of rusting and was removed easily enough.

 

The simple answer re differences in .177 and .22 is that a .177 pellet is smaller and will travel in a faster, flatter line, hence less adjustment (hold over/under) required for shots closer or further from your set zero.

 

.22 is a bigger pellet with more energy transfer on impact but requires more adjustment in aim on targets closer or further from your set zero but the extra stopping power has been preferred by hunters in the past. I shoot with both and they both do the job!

 

It's really a preference thing and to be honest, it won't make much difference to you starting out as you won't know the differences.

 

You've got a great, powerful gun there that will last years and is at the top of it's range. It weighs a ton but this can be an advantage in holding your aim steady (Well, I found it to be!) and a permission! Get out and enjoy it mate, Congratulations!

All sounds good then. I didn't feel that it was too heavy. Especially when i had a feel of my friends Theoben that thing weighed a tonne.

 

Will need some camos now lol.

As has been said above the state of the outside of the gun is pretty irrelevant except for the fact that it might not be as pleasing to the eye. As long as there is nothing wrong with the internals you should have no problem.
