Would have been nicer to read,,,,,,,,,,,

Asked my son to give me a hand today with a bit of fencing in the garden,,,,,,,,,,, Was a bit shocked that I had neglected to ever show him how to hammer a nail in straight, and stupidly thought that this sort of thing should be taught at school. Anyway after an hour or two of me showing him some basic stuff that should be handed down from father to son, he showed an interest and I really enjoyed spending some quality time with the lad, I remember him mentioning that he fancied building a hut in the garden, so ive told him to sketch out what he is thinking and we shall get a list of bits and pieces together that we'll need. Should be a nice little project to learn him a bit about planning and preparation, who know, he might be a natural and would be nice to see him get a career in the building trade!............ I could have handled the situation a lot differently by being impatient after he bent a few nails and blamed schools these days for not teaching them the basics, but he would have only lost his rag stormed off and a barrier would have gone up between us.

No offence meant. Just thinking out loud.

No offence taking mate.Me and my lad get on great.Had him out shooting and hunting since he was five.Has his own lurcher. When i am working he walks the dogs feeds them and cleans out the kennels. And like myself loves his fishing. The reason i put the thread up lads dont seem to have the basic skills we learned as youngsters. And his reply was a belter.Dident teach me how to build a fence.atb. Thinking back we had woodwork and metalwork at school it was a precursor to a some getting a skilled job when we had industries that needed them ,to have an apprenticeship was a good thing apart from the crap wages ,If you didnt get an apprenticeship there was always the mill or the mines todays society is run on computers so being literate on them for most is vital .I personally think that hand skills should be taught in schools but will probably wont be ,. PS I ended up a Joiner

I'm only 25 so got the brunt of all paperwork no practical work in school. I was lucky however that i always had an interest in all things interesting and tinkered with motorbikes and cars from a young age. Landed up getting an apprenticeship in a powerstation where i worked with some of the best engineers i had ever met or am ever likely to meet. Old school fitters who knew the job, how to get it done and most importantly how you learn to look after your colleagues as a sixth sense. This has all but disappeared in modern paperwork run engineering where if you stuck to the paperwork you would either do the job wrong or not at all. It is shocking some of the lads i come across who are apprentice fitters and sparks some having done all their training and they're useless. Sometimes dangerous too, i was lucky enough to get a clip round the ear even as an apprentice if i did anything dangerous. They dont get that now and i think they are worse off for it.

Gotta agree many went to work in Germany late 70s early 80s when our trade took a slump .A mate of mine predicted that we would be using foreign labour due to the lack of apprenticeships offered .In the company I served my time it went down from 4 apprentices in each trade brickie joiner plasterer and plumber to none in the space of 4 YEARS, plus not many wanted to stand the low wages in the LOADSAMONEY MENTALITY OF THE TIME

I'm 15 i think i started doing wood work with my granddad when i was about 8 years old make benches for his green house's planters ect but he would never buy wood! everything was made out of old wood that he got from the tip broken bits out of the builders merchants old scaffolding planks ect... so i was given the job of pulling old nails out until i could be trusted to hammer a nail in straight lol then he thought me to do good straight cuts with the saw then he started showing me how to use a drill to make pilot holes for screws and showed me how to use a counter sinker ect the he started letting me use the jig saw, But lol there was a lot of shouting involved in that process and and a fair few cuts and bad hands after missing with the hammer :icon_redface: lol showed me how to do everything the proper way how to look after my tools. then i started secondary school i was looking forward to tec until i found out how shit it is

lol but if I'm being honest i can make just about any thing i have wanted to make now form ferret hutch's s to chicken coops to work benches fitting shelves animal traps ferret boxes bird tables bird boxes all sorts really I really enjoy doing my diy, saving up grouse beating money to buy my own tools now I even buy wood now !Much to my granddads dislike lol

I'll try and put some pictures up soon!
