lofty95 0
i have an 8 mth old springer for a week now and i have have been keeping him in the utility room till the run was finished he has a tendency to bark and howl when i put him back in the utility room and also first thing in the morning. I put him into the run for about ten minutes the other day and he went mental. He is coming from a home where he was kennelled with another springer. Is this just a case of he needs time to adjust or could i be in for a long few months of it. Any advice would be most grateful Quote Link to post
Hannah4181 260
If he's been used to living with another dog, it may just take a while for him to adjust to being on his own. I would put him in the run/utility room with a big meaty bone or a training toy stuffed with food, that should hopefully keep him entertained for a while and get him used to being an only dog. watchman 256
yes mate its gonna need time,as hannah says good meaty bone to keep it occupied, you must not give in to it,you will just be making a rod for your own back,if it starts kicking off tell it to shut the f**k up,words to that effect, quick squirt with a water hose with the command should help,at 8 months old it should learn pretty quick imo Quote Link to post

Hannah4181 260
I'm not an expert on gundogs, but i know a lot of people who keep them and feed a raw diet. I can't see it being a problem at all. I'd do the bone thing for a week or so to allow it to settle . . .. then get tough!! Quote Link to post
Countrykid 1
Just to back Hannah up: My Mum has been working training gun dogs for about 25 years (since she was about 15) And she always gives them a bone, not constantly but every so often. In this case I doubt it would make it hard mouthed. Try what Hannah said! Quote Link to post

askiro 1
hi. i find the best way to stop whining is to blast them with a hose. While in the utility room get a water pistol and blast the dog with a gruff command of "QUIET". and when in the run, try and set up a hose pipe to point towards the dog, by cable tying it high on the run, an if the dog barks give him a blast without him actually seeing you. It won't take to long before they get the message. And with the bone thing, all dogs need bones for conditioning/teeth cleaning. It will not encourage the dog to become hard in the mouth. rob.
