whats youre view on this and how close can you go without problems, im thinking of lining my bitch to her litter brother next year if all goes to plan

 

Well, at least you have a plan, which is a lot more than some people involved with breeding dogs..

It is the closest, on paper..

Ive been involved with breeding using line breeding techniques with dogs, birds, leeks the lot..In over 30 years we only bred this close once..and that was an accidental mating (it did however produce an American champion and reserve champion) I also know a lot of well informed breeders who also adopt these breeding alternatives, very few of these poeple have used that mating. Now half brother half sister matings, and NOW you are taking..

No dog is free from faults, and even those of us who advocate line or in breeding arnt really bothered if the odd dog comes through now and again with what we consider to be undesirable traits, its simply eliminated from any future breeding plans, and by using the dogs that come through without the same specific fault, you will eventually obtain purity of genes. I know a labrador breeder who produces some of the best stuff in the country, but from time to time a pure white one comes through..

What about putting your bitch back to its father, keep the best bitch pup and then as a prospective breeding in the future, put that bitch to the brother you speak of, just a thought. The brother you speak of might be a good dog, but he may not be able to produce the goods, a dog cannot pass on to its offspring what it dosnt have genetically. If your bitch, and its brother are both doing the business it partly because the father made them, he has proved he can do it, so use him again.

Line breeding isnt just a quick fix, sometimes it works other times it may not, the results have to be evaluated each litter.

When we bred a lot, at shows at coursing events or when out on hunting days or nights, if a great dog came along, the clever breeders would see what the parent were, see how this great dog was produced..so many times Ive seen really good dogs, and loads of people jumping on to the bandwagon to use it as a stud, and, got nothing..

Just cause a dog may have a fault does not mean it will be automatically doubled up on if you inbreed on it. If inbreeding cannot always guarantee you perfect success then guess what, it aint always gonna guarantee you failure neither. Dont worry about everybody's theories and bullshit. Breed the dogs and cull accordingly and thats that.
