wexford Pa 84
I personally think its too close tho pal, but ur losing nothing by tryin as long as ur true to yourself as far as deformaties go, and dont be afraid to cull.. I presume ur plannin on keepin the pups yourself? ...... Pa Quote Link to post

fieldsman 51
I've seen pedigree pups with the Sire being great grandad and grandad and dad and faults do appear eg: shortening of lower jaw and lack of testicles which can in some cases be associated with diabetes. Quote Link to post
dafydd thomas 13
i very much hope it will not have any effect on the amount of balls they have if you follow Quote Link to post

skinz 11
if there is no other dogs in the line and you have to do this mating that close too keep the line going then go for it and hope for the best, if the pups dont turn out all well then you'll just have too cut your losses and look for a decent outcross wich given time you will anyhow, as two gens of direct matings brother sister will most probobly not turn out well. Helen 2
I have a dog from a brother sister mating (didn't know when I bought it) I have had nothing but problems with it since I brought it home. It has skin problems caused by allergies, auto immune problems and it gets colitis at the drop of a hat. it has cost me a fortune in vets bills. If you don't have to breed them together I wouldn't. Leeview 791
whats youre view on this and how close can you go without problems, im thinking of lining my bitch to her litter brother next year if all goes to plan good topic dafydd i have a simillar idea as you the the litter brother to my bitch is the ideal type off dog i would like to cross my bitch with.if some one could answer what do they consider as line breeding my take on it is if you have a good line to keep it going as your own line you have to some where cross the same bloodlines together the question been how close is ok When my dad was breeding whippets he swore by line breeding he wanted the dog and bitch to both have the same grandsire(but not to the same bitch)on the dogs side and on the dams side of their pedigree, but no closer than that.Any closer and IMHO it becomes in breeding Y.I.S Leeview Quote Link to post
TOPPER 1,809
brother - sister mating s are not to be recomended 1/2 brother to 1/2 sister is the best mating i found , why dont you put the sire over the bitch you can do father over daughter with great sucsess this way you will still be tight , if you go sister brother be prepared to cull hard its best if you can run them on for 6 months to see all the problems inc kidney problems as this is very prominant in brother sister matings . the best mating would be if the dam has had another litter by a differnt sire or vs versa and theres a good dog in the ofspring and use that over your bitch ie half brother half sister this will be tight but 9 out of 10 times you wont get litter wasteage , atb top Quote Link to post
stabba 10,745
Ive seen brother to sister matings before... 1 litter contained 6 puppies.. 4 of them had fluid on the brain and 1 had cleft palatt. The 1 remaing pup was not right in the head... the other litter i seen was just as bad... too close (brother/sister)matings are not to be undertaken lightly imo.....Good luck in your endeavours mate... youll certainley need it.... atb stabba Quote Link to post
dafydd thomas 13
having considered all implications i will probably put her father over her and possibly the progeny back over her litter brother, but all this depends on a lot of things going to plan and with running dogs it often doesnt atb dt Quote Link to post

huntingalltheway 2
ok thanks for constructive comments well see how we got on, if it does go ahead i will keep you informed mate i think its 50/50 i know loads of people who have tried your method of inbreeding and some litters have come out ok not perfect and the others have come out wrong eg. deformed, height, weight all wrong ingrowing nails, unaccended balls, bad hips, blindness, hearing prob, the list is endless the further away you go as in father to daughter you have less risk but the closer the blood line brother to sister the percentage of deformities goes up. some liters are fine but most wernt of good enough quality if you truley wanted to keep the line going and the quality i would think it would be alot better to do it the traditional way of line breeding. or is it as your way is more convieniant and cheaper. my choice i would go traditional but each to our own. i know i wouldnt buy a inbreed pup for my self as i know to well of the risks and health probs i will most likely incounter later on Edited February 28, 2010 by huntingalltheway Quote Link to post
