RSWO 0
Just got a new English Springer puppy (Tara) to day and was wanting to start using a few simple commands that I can carry on throughout her training. Seen lots of threads on voice, hand and whistle commands and was trying to find out what is the best mix and when should I start on different commands. All help would be welcome, i do relise that this is going to be a long process and it will take alot of practice and time and that I shouldn't expect miricles over night however just want to start off on the right foot. Thanks, RSWO Edited February 27, 2010 by RSWO
Sighthound 49
This guy is from Tillicoultry. http://stores.lulu.com/wildfowling The e-book - Gun Dog Training Made Easy is very good. I followed his methods and am pleased with the results.
Annmarie09 5
You need to decide on what commands you want to use and stick to them throughout. Decide carefully because some people use a command and then wish they had picked a different one. For example "down" for lie down, but then they automatically say down for "stop jumping up" and "get down off the sofa"! I personally use sit, stay, lie down, paw, go pee (for any outside business), calm (for when she is overexcited or is fidgety getting something done like a cut cleaned), come, look (to get attention), off (get off the sofa), NO (very important for unwanted behaviour), biscuit (for emergencies!). I prefer to teach the voice command first and then use it with a hand movement until you can do without the voice (because there will always be occasions you still need the voice) and a whistle (210.5) for recall. You need to decide whether you want to use a clicker, they can be useful but perhaps more for house dogs/pets. Always end on a good note and remember the tone of voice is as important as the word.
