supervision with new firearm

Recommended Posts

you hear stories of new firearms owners needing a "mentor" this is at the request of various firearms depts.what this means is open to debate.if they grant you a fac then they are confirming you are of sound mind to own a fire arm -then why would you need someone to hold your hand?

i think in the not too distant future all new fac owners will have to pass some kind of competance test before being allowed to purchase a firearm.

i hope that never happens but watch this space!

isn't it done when the applicant has little or no experience of fac rifles ??

i think its a good idea as you can learn some good tips from a person who has been shooting rifles for a long time

and if it gets you the ticket it has to be a good thing ??

as already said a written test will come, as will the licences for all guns including air guns

Usually it's same or bigger. It's very common for people moving into deer calibres when they've only had rimfire before and personally I would recommend to anyone to get themselves a mentor when they start out - I am opposed, however, to FLO's making it conditional, I see it as the thin end of the wedge.

I started out shooting a mate's LR before getting my FAC, he has a .243 and his DSC1 & 2 and he's been an invaluable source of information and guidance for me.

it seems to be commonplace in west mercia for new application. even though i had a german licence for along time and used big boys calibers i had this condition on my rimfire!

its being taken off now.

it says on the ticket"accomanied by an experianced rifle shooter",would that be a soldier? some one who has shot for over 20 years? someone who has the european weapons proficiancy for long and short(rifle and hand/sidearms)i'm all of these and must have my hand held?

what the heck, try not to get a condidtion but if there is no way around it get as much down the barrel as poss over a couple of months(ammunition use is the deciding factor here and not time held) and then ask them to remove the condition.

i would be all for a basic/proficiancy test for firearms,if it did not mean ridiculous costs for the applicant

a basic load/unload,make safe and chat about safety would be a good start with the feo.
