butcherboy 68
I NEVER stop my spaniels jumping up on me, I WANT them to WANT to be with me. I don't want to put any barriers between me and the dog. Quote Link to post
Hannah4181 260
I personally don't think stopping a dog jumping up will put barriers between you! Its about the dog having manners, and its also not practical or acceptable to have a wet muddy dog leaping all over you or visiting guests. I hate dogs that jump up and make sure i stop the problem instantly. Standing on the back toe as Watchman suggested, or taking hold of its front paws when it jumps up, and squeezing its toes, also hold onto its feet to prevent it from getting down, the feeling of being trapped and its toes being squeezed will stop it in no time. If i ask my dogs to jump up they will. for a cuddle or a bit of fuss, they won't however do it uninvited. Quote Link to post

I think I'll follow their lead My dogs don't jump up on OTHER people. I don't worry about wet clothes as I only see my dogs when I have my "dog" clothes on. Then again if I wanted a pet Quote Link to post
Hoolit 2
If you are shooting with this dog jumping up is a definate no no geting your clothes muddy is the least of your worries . If you have a loaded gun in your hand and the dog jumps up gives you a fright resulting in a possible gun accident or jumps up on anyone with a gun , it could catch the trigger and kill someone IT HAS HAPPENED. Stoping this dangerous habit is something you should do straight away, simpley lift your knee every time the dog jumps up to you he he will connect with your knee and soon stop. I dont mean you should ram your knee into his chest just raise your knee quickly he bang into it and after a couple of days hell give up. Good luck Quote Link to post

Then again if I wanted a pet Well if thats what the pro spaniel trainers do . . . then crack on! The guy asked how to STOP the dog doing it . . . . so i gave him a training method which i know to work. For some of us dogs our part of our everyday life, and for me i don't want them jumping all over me, dog clothes or not. My "pets" are both well trained and well mannered . . . . . . even when they are working. Horses for courses. Quote Link to post

activeviii 8
what do you think your knee is for. as it jump you give it the knee, after it falls on its arse a few times it will think twice about it. mines great as he will not jump up at me unless i tell it to but for some reason he jumps up at blokes and his paws are right in their nuts. well i tell them every time but they dont listen so tuff.lmao. upperlane2 4
Thanks for that guys lots to work with there instead of squeezing its toes or kneeing it a simple way is to turn ur back and ignore it as soon as it sits down or stops jumping reward it ull have to keep doing it but ull be suprised how easy it works the secret to training any dog is REPEATIVE TRAINING just keep it simple and ull end up with a steady workable gundog atb with ur training Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
"any attention given is a win to the dog" the most effective way is to tread lightly on the hind toes( as said in the above post) and not to shove/knee or say anything.if the "down" command is set then use that later. my dogs will jump up too and it does not bother me(sometimes a bummer when you have clean jeans on). a dog is capable of distinguishing when he can and cannot be boistrous. when i have a gun they should sit next to me or be at work and not trying to get affection. if the dog is not working then the gun is broken. just an oppinion Quote Link to post
