A few hours with jam1 and stew dog

Recommended Posts

After advertising for help on here to rid a few farms from rabbits I met up with jam1 and stew dog from sheffield for a few hours out. They eventually got here after missing the turn on the A1 for Lincoln, its easily done now the roundabout has gone. We all piled into my 4x4 the 3 of us, jamie's dog a cross lakie border, 3 of my ferrets and one of jamies.

I decided that we would do a local farm, Nelstrops and Branston, its heaving with rabbits but not easy work at all. We arrived in thick fog and after a quick chat we moved onto the first warren, a 10 holer in the edge of some trees. Within seconds of the ferrets entering 2 rabbits bolted clean, good start I thought. The rest would not be that simple though, the majority is hawthorn hedging with LOTS of holes, one of those when you wonder where they start and finish as they stretch the whole field. We piled on the nets and kept picking the odd 2 or 3 off before moving to the next row. The ground just looked like a giant aero bar but much worse, there must be hundreds of rabbits in there but its frustrating for the ferrets getting the run around, you really need a sack of ferrets to do it. We plodded on in the reasonably good weather for what we are used to, infact I was getting a dab on phewww!!!

After this marathon stretch we managed a few but knew there were many more left in there, well thats just how it goes I suppose. On to a small copse where some large trees had been felled to clear the overhead power lines, and yes thats where the rabbit holes were, just hope we don't need a dig! After we had covered this we then decided to call it a day, so it was back to the vehicle, sarnies and flasks and have a bit of banter about the day.

We had an enjoyable few hours, bagged about 19 rabbits, lost 2 from unseen bolt holes and 5 that tripped the nets in the hawthorn twigs, we could have done many more if we had done the easy bits but the difficult ones also need doing.

An enjoyable day with great guys and a few bunnies in the bag what more could you want Eh!!!

Oh by the way forgot to mention about that little incident.

We were walking through the rough when the dog put up a rabbit, startled it ran up a large pile of wood chippings 4 foot high and jumped straight into stew's arms, he was that surprised he forgot to grab it, never make the cricket team mate!!!

One of those strange but true thingie bobs.
