nicklpool 0
My 5-month old bedWhip x pointer has started retrieving, but tends to drop the dummy 5-10 feet short. Have tried the Dave Sleight technique of starting with a tug of war, which fires him up, but has no other effect. Any suggestions? Cheers, Nick Quote Link to post
stroller 341
try and turn away to get him to follow you and be excited about it he will probably run up to you and dont take the dummy from him let him keep it while you make a fuss of him Quote Link to post
FENS FEVER 147
if that dosent work then, try meeting him half way has he walkes towards you you walk to him if he runs away then walk away, Quote Link to post
nicklpool 0
Sorry - my original Q is unclear: he rushes on, keen for a treat, but dumps the dummy before he reaches me... Dont want to discourage him from his present half-arsed efforts (especially as the dummy sometimes gets there by bouncing off him or skidding along the ground!) Cheers, Nick Quote Link to post
salclalin 240
if that dosent work then, try meeting him half way has he walkes towards you you walk to him if he runs away then walk away, Sorry Mate.Iv'e got to Disagree with you there. The whole Idea is for the Pup to bring the Dummy to you.Not for you to Walk to the Pup to Take the Dummy.Otherwise the Pup wiil think that is What is expected of it. wrowmon 1
do you kneel down and call the pup or stand up? as he's only 5 months you will tower over him and as he thinks you are the top dog he may be scared of bringing it into you.had a similar problem with a gundog of mine but after a bit of encouragement we got round it...call pup back when kneeling then after a while standing... just my view.. Buddykangoo 0
Get him to retrive while on a couple meter leash and [bANNED TEXT] he stops still tug him but not to hard good luck Quote Link to post
stroller 341
you know what you described in your 2nd bit sounds like a typical excited puppy retrieve, just get down on your knees and turn your back to him he will run in to you Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,238
swap the dummy for a dead rabbit, or skin the rabbit and tie some skin on the dummy. give this a try, it will hold his attention longer than just the dummy Quote Link to post
