valerio 32
How do you rate fox as a test for a terrier?I dont rate it too much,I've never seen a fox as a challenge for dogs,I rate it the easiest quarry you can find underground here in Italy.I think selecting working terriers on fox we are losing something mainly in the use of the voice.I think only 10% or less of fox dogs will make the grade on hard quarry. Only my two pence tought. Quote Link to post
Guest oldskool
there is a good few terriers killed by foxes,,, alot of boys brag about how theyre dogs slay foxes and i used to be one of them, then i lost a terrier to a big mean dog fox, when i dug down he had her killed.... i got my eyes opened that day! so imo, i think a fox is a good test. perhaps not the ultimate test but good none the less Quote Link to post
Great White Hunter 78
Depends on the Fox This years Cub will not be in as good a shape as a two or three year old Dog fox in his prime . he would be a match for any terrier . i have seen hard terriers getting a good pasting from a fox which has the advantage underground he may be higher than the terrier or just a tight hole all the terrier can see or grip is rows of Ivory . No A good Winter hill foxfed on the best game about is a good test for any terrier Quote Link to post
staffy-1 0
if i remember correctly, i was watching a wildlife programme a few month back. And the presenter was commenting that foxes only live to two years old in the wild, but when in captivivity up to fourteen years old Quote Link to post
swanseajack 227
A good fox in the right place is plenty good enough to match any terrier, yes there are easy foxes where a terrier has plenty of room to take advantage and use his jaw strength and ability to overcome. A fox in a tight place where the terrier can't get at it, to get a hold, is more than a match for a hard terrier, hard terriers that don't back off can take serious punishment to no avail.. I've had and seen good terriers go in and 'slay' big dog foxes in minutes, only to see the same terrier having a pasting of a scrawny little vixen that's been wedged up in tree roots..... blackpack 70
as fox is our only test now we have no choice. But were i live its only 40mins from Snowdonia mountains i would like to see any ones terrier make easy meat of a fox up here. Theres alot of my mates and many more who have lost a good HARD dog up here Quote Link to post

lampinglurcher 36
what do you work them on in italy? Quote Link to post
valerio 32
certanly a fox can match a terrier in a tight place, but the problem is the earth not the quarry, the same fox in a bigger place is not as difficoult.but my question is are we losing something selecting the terriers on fox?I think we are losing the use of the voice and the ability to adapt to the situation Quote Link to post

Guest Ditch_Shitter
Valerio, forgive me mate, but this is a bit of a daft f***ing question. The vast majority of these lads are in UK. As BlackPack so rightly put it; Foxes are all they Legally have! So, unless ye want talk of illegal quarry - and I don't for a second suspect that was your aim - then it's as open ended as asking 'What If .....' Bengal Tiger, Polar Bear or Gorrilla. Or anything else these people can't put their Dogs too. Why not drop the subject, before some fifteen year old arm chair hero crops up and starts talking shit which'll have the entire thread deleted ~ and start another round of rucks about heavy handed moderation? The guys have said as much as they can. End of? And note: I'm not a Moddie and I don't put Dogs in the ground, just to dig the little f***as out again! So I'm neutral! Quote Link to post
Guest oldskool
DS, you should be a mod :thumbs-up: !!! i reckon you have a bit of a talent that the mods would envy!!! but any who, your right there is only so far this thread can go before somebody puts a foot wrong... but what if a few of our yanky doodle friends or maybe our itallion stallion chums popped up and started talking about the quarry they consider a test then maybe things will last a bit longer and all will go well... for a change. a few pics would be a real treat... i think i remeber somebody had a clip of a terrier working a coon, that was cool :thumbs-up: Quote Link to post

Dont no what terrier you use, but for a pat sized terrier a fox is quarry enough, and sometime's more then enough. How do you think all those working bloodlines stay alive? And what quarry are you work them on??? Quote Link to post
