most of my black and tans have a good nose my old bitch has a very good nose, my BLACK lakeland also has a good nose, must have just been the blacks youve seen, like anything there will be good and bad in each breed some will be good some will be shite its just the way it gos.

what age did yours start using their nose properly

No personal experience here, but I understand that teckels (i.e. working dachshunds) are supposed to have very good noses and from the right lines can be worked underground.

any terrier that works to ground should have a good nose(they are all bred for finding in the dark,they don't do that by ear ).

the problem is rarely that the dogs are nose deaf,but that they have not learned to use them above ground(we would not know ifhe uses it below),and therefore down to training and experiance.

 

teckel will(from working lines,you may have the odd failiure)all work above and below and have the advantage that they are the smallest hound and not a terrier.(take a look at teckel ears).

i would venture to say that MOST terriers are more than capable of using their noses if they know what to use it for regardless of breed and type.most will be capable of blood trailing if taught.

ok mate,share your experiences of black dogs and their noses.how many black dogs have you seen work ?,personally most of the black dogs ive seen/owned have been ok at finding.theres shite and good in most lines

ok example at local permo the othe day with my mates red lakey mix and this black patterdale got a strong mark that the fox was home off the red dog so we tryed the black 1 it was screaming to get in....i thought what a mark so we let it in half hour later we break threw ro it bayin at a rabbit so let red one in and out bolts thefox in10mis

Id be saying-- the owners of the 'blacks' you have seen, are crap, if what you say is true. Who could keep a terrier with no nose, it wouldnt be able to mark or find in the big spots, it would be useless to me and I think most people would feel the same.

I have a black pat,whos now 13 and from his first year working till his last his nose was second to none,even after the iner tissus were rip,d out and cut off! the wee dog made bigger and so called better terriers he worked with over the years look average! with his nose and positive marking! He came in from ireland from no top lines but was a hell of a marker and finisher! I recon mate it all comes down to good uns and bad uns from any strain! atb
