NICKNSD 0
I have recently purchased a BSA Lightning XL from someone on this site. When my gun comes, how do i test how powerfull it is? i know i could go buy a cronograph but is there any other method i could use for seeing how powerfull it is. I have been told that the gun is only two years old so i am not to worried about it been low on power but this is my first gun so dont have any experiences to compare it with. I would like to think that it shooting close to the limit but how do i tell or am i worrying about nothing? Anyones views would be much appreciated. Quote Link to post
farmboy99 1
theres not really another way mate unless you have something that you know is a certain power that you could use as a constant and even then its really inaccurate youre have to take the plunge and buy a chrono or see if you can borrow one from someone or a shop? davyt63 1,845
hi buddy i think your right you need to know what your rifle is putting out! if you havent got a chronograph?then take it to your local gun shop, and they will chrono it for you.maybe for a small fee.i have a chrono so thats just a guess the fee! or if there is some one on here who lives close to you, with one may be they will help ya out! but your dead right on wanting to know, seems you have bought it second hand.can you ask the person you bought it off? regards davy Quote Link to post
Buster321c 1,010
All the time ive been around shooting , i wish people were as concerned about accuracy and pellet placement as they are power . Personally , i would chose consistency / accuracy over power any day ofthe week . Main thing you should be concerned with , is practise . Quote Link to post
farmboy99 1
but youve got to admit craig if its putting out say 9 then youre missing out on a bit of range hunting and put down power. i know what youre saying though power is not everything at all but i like ot know that a gun is capable Quote Link to post
Buster321c 1,010
This is true , but i would drop mine down to 10 if it gave better results . ( obviously pcp ) with the drop you would also get higher shot count . You ask some of the HFT and FT boys , they wont shoot at 11.7 as its just a tad unpredictable , whatever suits you is the key , but as with life , everyday`s a school day , and we never stop learning . Your rig will always out shoot you , so every effort should be made to get the maximum out of it , that said it can only be done by knowing your gun and its capabilities inside out . And as were on a hunting site , respect for your quarry should be equally as high on your list of priorities , which takes us back to accuracy / consistency / practise . Quote Link to post

NICKNSD 0
Sorry everyone new to the forum aswell as airgunning I am in nottingham well actually in a small village on the outskirts called linby Quote Link to post
farmboy99 1
i suppose if it affects accurancy then it may be better to be at a certain power for targets and that but for hunting i think more power tends to be a good thing depends what youre up to with it and of course how your rifle behaves. definatly a valid point craig fair play Quote Link to post
SEAN3513 7
too much power in a springer isnt a good thing..........................unless its a heavy one. the issues of recoil compramise accuracy...............a spinger around 10ft/lbs with minimum recoil is a much better tool, than one running close to 12ft/lbs with monumental recoil. as buster has said..................shot placement over everything else every time. the hunting range between 10 and 12 is minimal........better to be bang on at 10 than hitty missy at 12. if you buy a chrono ( 38 quid ish) test your gun and then sell it if you need to.........you will only lose a fiver or so......well worth it IMO. atb sean Quote Link to post
