The best and only diet a dog needs are red meat.. white meat.. vegatble (found within a whole carcass) bone and fresh drinking water........ a dog or wild animal doesnt need pasta in its diet at all..

Yeah... how many vets are going to say BARF... not many ill bet mate.... Dogs are carnivores pure and simple... Not italian scrotes with a penchant for spaghetti... pasta may do good things for a dog.

If you want to feed your dog pasta that is up to you but I will repeat again, a dog does not NEED carbs/pasta. Dogs can quite adequately manage to produce glucose from fats and proteins. You will ne

The same vets who presumably know that the best diet for cows, herbivores, is to be feed them the remains of other cattle. Remember BSE

in answer to your question -- a little bit of pasta added to your dogs diet a couple of times a week wont do it any harm..

But will it do it any good either?? atb stabba

That will depend if they get an alternate carb source and if not then of course it will do good as it will supply a direct form of glucose so the dog doesn't need to reprocess fat into glucose which would be less efficient. Its all about balence.

If you want to feed your dog pasta that is up to you but I will repeat again, a dog does not NEED carbs/pasta.

Dogs can quite adequately manage to produce glucose from fats and proteins.

You will never hear of "carbohydrate deficiency" in a dog quite simply because there is no NEED for carbohydrates in a dogs diet.

FEEDING THE RACING GREYHOUND

Your aim in feeding greyhounds is to provide a balanced diet that maintains them in good condition, and allows them to perform to their maximum potential on the racetrack. To achieve this aim you need to know what nutrients are contained in the different ingredients that make up a greyhound’s ration. A nutrient is something a greyhound needs to help it to grow, stay alive and work, as nutrients provides greyhounds with energy.

There are six nutrient groups that are needed in a greyhound’s daily ration:

1.Water

2.Protein (amino acids

3.Carbohydrates/Fiber

4.Fat

5.Vitamin

6.Minerals

And that comes from where and is based on what. From that list ALL dogs need 1,2,4,5,6, and no, they do not need fibre either.

If you feel your dog needs carbohydrates then the dog is overworked and/or it is not getting enough proteins and fats

How about based on;

Performance dog feeding

Arleigh Reynolds, DVM, PhD, DACVN

Jill Cline, PhD (2005)

Dogs involved in sprinting and weight pulling activities such as sight hound racing or sledge pulling competitions undergo short periods of very intense exercise. These types of dogs typically do not have higher energy requirements than those of moderately active pet dogs. A greyhound expends approximately 75 kcal per race6. The energy required for these types of activities is solely anaerobic and comes from the muscle energy stores. Most canine athletes engaged in sprint type activities have an energy requirement of 1.6-2 X resting energy rate1. An appropriate feeding regime for sprint type canine athletes consists of a diet that contains approximately 25% calories from protein, 30% calories from fat and 45% calories from carbohydrates

Robert L. Gillette, DVM, MSE

Sprint athletes utilize the one enzyme system and the glycolytic energy system. The duration of their activity does not last long enough to access energy from the oxidative energy system. Their base diet should include a high percentage of carbohydrates and protein.

Joseph J. Wakshlag, MS, DVM (2004)

In light

of these findings and other recent literature

that discusses the use of postexercise carbohydrate

supplements in racing sled dogs, it seems

that such supplements may be particularly

beneficial for these sprint-racing sled dogs to

replenish glycogen stores.15,16 Although exercising

dogs thrive on anaerobic oxidative fat metabolism

for their primary source of energy, it

is clear that glucose is being used as an energy

source during this high-intensity exercise.

I would like to see the studies your evidence is based on can you please post for all to read?

Which quotes

"Carbohydrates not only supply the energy required for running" so therefore without carbs dogs cannot run DOH.

Sandymere, without trying to bore everyone, quite simply do you believe that there is such a thing as carbohydrate deficiency in dogs?

I will also point out that if you believe in feeding carbs to your dogs and are already giving a "complete" food which are normally very high in carbs, why would they actually need even more carbs
