Tiercel 6,986
I use 1.5mm for all my long nets I have never snapped a line by pulling on it yet although I have had a few bitten through. TC Quote Link to post

Tiercel 6,986
Same here 3mmjust because i got a good deal on it There is not a better reason on the planet. The reason I use 1.5mm is that, when you hank the net onto the end pins the hank is so large using 3mm that it makes the net difficult to hold when setting and picking up. Where as with 1.5mm it is totaly managable. Of course with a pre set net it does not matter as it all goes in the basket. Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
I use 3mm never had a problem with lines wearing or being bitten through I suppose you can use whar you're comfortable with ATB Funnily enough I have never had a problem with the lines wearing, some of my nets are nearly 25 years old and still have the original running lines. Although they do have a lot of patches where the rabbits have chewed the mesh and a few repairs to the running lines, natural wear and tear to me. As my long netting is done single handed I can be away from the net for 15 minutes sometimes more while banting the field. It does not take a rabbit long to chew through even 3mm line. I know of a few people who single handed long net and every one of them have had lines chewed through at some time or other. TC Edited February 22, 2010 by tiercel Quote Link to post
The one 8,467
As above the only problem ive had with the drawcords is the lines being biten threw , and knotting them to make a tempary repair and needing to rethread my nets now Quote Link to post
Fat-Ferret 857
As above the only problem ive had with the drawcords is the lines being biten threw , and knotting them to make a tempary repair and needing to rethread my nets now You dont need to rethread them because of knots...Just splice the line, It leaves it like new, you wouldnt even know it was done. Martin Kings book shows you how to do it. Quote Link to post
longnetter 32
Interesting how peoples experiences differ, I've been long netting for over twenty years now and honestly can't remember a running line ever being chewed through . I can see the problem with hanking a 3mm line onto an end pin though, but I use a quick set basket ATB Quote Link to post
heritage 202
Ive never had a line bitten through either, its all well and good considering what diameter to use but id also consider the material type, nylon is the one i prefer on "newer" nets as i did try poly but it just didnt match up it seemed to be a little weaker, frayed and pulled easy and didnt dye well, atb Quote Link to post
The Ferret Tamer 1
2mm braided works for me. Quote Link to post

They work just as well as a splice and will last for years, this join is about 20 years old. TC Quote Link to post
