MR TEA POT 1,287
this post was started last year so what dog did you end up with fella ? I haven't got one yet things did not go right on the home front,we moved in and then found out we needed rewiring, the electric meter was all wired up wrong,we dug the front garden over to put a drive in and then relished the person who had the house before us had dumped half a ton of hardcore on it then covered it over with top soil .And thats only a few things that went wrong And the surveyor(spelling) said the house was fine i think he was releted to stevie wonder . But the good news i am now in the middle of building a run outside for a lurcher,so it needs to live outside now. Just one question are lurchers quiet when put outside or do they howl. Like i said LAST YEAR it will be my first lurcher Edited October 9, 2007 by MR TEA POT Quote Link to post
Ray Mears 272
are you looking forward to sleepless nights, i got my dog from a bloke who kept it inside fair enough she was only 8 weeks old but when i put her in her run outside she screamed the place down for 3 nights this happend i had next door round the next day asking how long this would carry on. but whatever you do dont go down to it or give it any attension in anyway because it will do it over and over agen to get your attension. i no a few people that have used a radio on low in the pen to take the dogs minds of things dont no weather it works but i would try anything once Quote Link to post
MR TEA POT 1,287
cheers mate. How long was it before your dog calmed down?. One of my neighbours is deaf and the other keeps chickens which make enough noise to wake the dead,so i don't think my neighbours will complain. Its just the girlfriend who is a light sleeper and she will be moaning . Plus we have a patterdale that sleeps in the house, would it be a problem if one slept outside and the other slept inside?. I know its a few questions but i want to get things sorted for when i get one. One more question i was wondering if anyone had a good book about lurchers they are willing to sell or lend me?Thanks. EDITED TO ADD.Please keep the advice coming as i need all the info i can get. Thanks in advance. Edited October 9, 2007 by MR TEA POT Quote Link to post
Ray Mears 272
it last 3 nights until by dog settled down and a few yaps here and there after that but nothing to what it was the first 3 nights. and if your pattledale is used to sleeping indoors it aint going to like it outside in the cold either but when thay have both settled down thay shoudent be a problem thay will be able to keep each other warm and its also abit of company also i would get a whippet x grey leathal dogs great speed but i dont think you could count out a beddie x. whatever you pick good luck and all the best w.b Quote Link to post
MR TEA POT 1,287
Cheers WB.What i meant about the dogs was,the patt sleeps inside the house,so i was going to leave her still indoors and keep the lurcher outside, was wondering if it would cause probs with one inside and the other outside. marky b 309
whippet/greys are a class wee dog... the only thing i can fault with them is that alot have extremely fine coats! they can be a game as bulls if you ever get the chance to chase something else plus you wouldnt even know they were about the house.. my old bitch used to spend her days at the bottom of the garden lying in an old wooden barrel.... i'd have to check her breath on a mirror to make sure she was still livin ... things soon changed when she saw me pull on my boots, you wouldnt have thought she was the same dog!!! the pups i have on the way are from her line,, cant wait lol iv got an old saluki/collie/greyhound bitch exactly the same spends all day sleeping til she see's me grab a slip lead. HAVE 2 AGREE THAT THE ONLY REAL PROBLEM I FIND IS THE FINE COAT.I KEEP HARDBLOOD WITH SALUKI IN THEM. WHEN I COME HOME FM WORK AT THE WK,END IN THE DARK ,THEY EXPECT IM TAKING THEM OUT 2 BE AT THE LAND FOR 1ST LIGHT. THEY GIVE ME ABOUT 2O MINS 2 GET READY THEN THEY CHANGE FM HAPPY KENNEL DOG`S 2 WERE GOING RUNNING MODE. PAIN IN THE ASS FM MY NEIGHBOURS VIEW,BUT WHAT TYPE OF LURCHER WOULDNT GET EXCITED AT GOING RUNNING??? Quote Link to post
lurcherman 28
I know you asked about a lurcher but for what you want, I think it would be worth your while considering a straight Whippet or WhippetXGreyhound (longdog). I think they are inclined to be easier going with other dogs than dogs with Bedlington Terrier in them plus you can be sure of a short coat. I'm not knocking Beddys though Here's a picture of my Whippet. Sorry I don't have any very detailed pictures small enough to fit on here yet. i agree wippet/greyhound or even a collie/wippet Quote Link to post
joedog 8
That was some good answers by the lads, try and get hold of poachers pocket breed, and definitely EG Walsh Lurchers and Longdogs. Quote Link to post
