snakes1989 1 Posted February 21, 2010 Report Share Posted February 21, 2010 hi as your prob going to tell im very green to lurchers and have got my self a whippet x collie x greyhound shes only a 2 weeks old soo i have 6 weeks to get ready for her . i have a few qestions i need answering 1.at what age can i give her a few little runs to the green rabbits of this year 2.what are the must kno commands 3.what age should i break her to ferrets and live stock and how do i go about doing this? atb snakes Quote Link to post
sh 08 17 Posted February 21, 2010 Report Share Posted February 21, 2010 break it to ferrets as early as pss about 15 weeks make sure the dog understands the command NO first. wait till next season end of september/ october before you take her running rabbits. make sure you have good recall in day and night. I used to take my pup up the local park at night with my lamp just to get her used to comming back in the dark before i took her lamping Quote Link to post
waidmann 105 Posted February 21, 2010 Report Share Posted February 21, 2010 (edited) i am new to lurchers too but feel i could answear the questions asked, 1. teach her all obiedience and handling commands you can,you have the time before work starts to get it right and build a "working bond" with the dog. most importantly recall,free heel sound retrieveing(waterwork) will make the dog more usefull than "just" running rabbits. 2. i would think about running her at about a year old (oppinions will differ)she should be fast enough and able to turn.too early may set her up for "yapping"/giving tounge while running. i'm sure otther,more experianced lurcher people will have other views but this is what i have been told and read untill now. good luck and i'd love to hear how you get on. waidmann p.s. break to ferrets as soon as jabbed up Edited February 21, 2010 by waidmann Quote Link to post
