Disatching foxes

Could you safetly and humanely use a .22 rifle to dispatch a fox in a cage trap? What's the recommended method? Thanks

A .22lr rimfire rifle or pistol is ideal for a very close range dispatch of a fox in a trap as would a .410 shotgun with moderator if working in a built-up area.

 

An instant humane kill will happen provide that the shot is well positioned and not rushed.

 

Its all about the right tool for the right job and being safe at the safe time.

 

Any large calibre than that would make a mess and would probably be very dangerous, especially when working in built-up urban areas.

 

I alway cover the trap with a large taurpaline and use a moderated .22lr rifle now. Very quick, clean and discreet.

 

I know I don't have to, but I now always call the Police Control room and get a reference number, to save any misunderstandings.

A .410 shotgun is also very effective, and allows the user a slightly larger margin for error, and safer due to the decreased risk of ricochet.

 

I think Stubby uses a Hushpower .410 to dispatch his foxes.

 

The other advantage of the .410 is that you only need a SGC.

lets not get into a debate about best form of dispatch here, but from my dealings, most urban caught foxes, once caught, simple curl up and wait, the 410 can be inserted through the mesh, an inch away from top of skull and pull the trigger, job done

 

getting the fox to "bite" the end of a barrel, would in my eyes constitute getting the fox distressed
