Is the old MYTH true??? Can small lurchers turn better than Big lurchers

Recommended Posts

when people see the size of my dog they immiediatly assume he cant turn well on rabbits and struggles due to his size 26"!! i was lead to belive this when first started in the running dog game!! but have since found that size is of no object when running a dog on a rabbit!! and have witnessed just as tight turns coming from bigger dogs as some smaller lurchers i have come across!! who feels that the smaller the dog the better the turning ability is truly justified????? all opinions welcome thanks!!

i would say that generally small dogs are better at turning because of low centre of gravity and all of that physics stuff

but the best rabbit dog i ever saw was a nearly pure greyhound 29" tts and man that dog was amazing. it was an irish dog owned by a lad who truly did not know what he had

So in answer to your question yes little dogs are generally better but there is always an exception because dogs arent machines and some of them have just a touch of magic

thanks for that!! i agree from a laws of physics kind of view they should be better on the spin!! but on the flipside ive seen some awesome runs from big dogs that would make even a smaller lurcher dizzy!! but as a whole its probably justified!!!

saw all sorts of dogs catch lots of rabs over the years best dogs ive saw were mostly 24 inches roughly on rabbs and smaller , all depends the desire and game craft had big dogs whonew when the rabbit turns .he is waiting for the rabbit useing his brain ,got abitch she doesnt let the rabbit get much space and saw her cutting across a fence to stop them like a collie even tho she is saluk based yet to have adog that couldnt pick arabbit up but the smaller ones were abit more lower to the ground to pick them up at times .

Down to a matter of kinetic energy, on the whole smaller dogs lighter in weight do turn better, but having said that if the dog does the job what the hell does it matter

i myself feel the same way if it gets the job done does it matter!! but there are a lot of people out there especially people who run lurchers on rabbits around me!! that turn there noses up to bigger dogs almost as if they judge the dog without giving it a chance to show what it can do!! this is really what im trying to see if people generally who run dogs feel big dogs struggle compared to smaller rabbiting dogs!! thanks for the replys so far!! This is some thing i have never been able to get my head around [bANNED TEXT] people say you want a small dog for rabbits [bANNED TEXT] the ideal size is 24tts give or take an inch.I have seen some very tall dogs make catching rabbits look like shelling peas and some small lurchers make it look like hard work.atb dell

john over the years ive saw a few dogs on the rabbs and so far size unless donkeys , hasnt saw one better than the other on open land lamping i catch as much with my old dog at times as with the smaller faster one , over the course of a season , ,but best size ive saw and had were 23 24 25 but balanced and quick ,had dogs catch rabbits on golf courses , allsorts of fast land , im not a small dog lover as i think a good meduim dog bred [bANNED TEXT] can still fill a bag and with the added size will fill it even better some nites with other game when it was legal

some larger dog's that catch well seem to have a great strike and don't alway's need to turn as well, its the pick up that they develope that makes the difference, timing ,and anticipation of the turn gives them the edge,no dallying about waiting to see what the quarry will do,prey drive and strike with speed will give a dog the result everytime !!!big or little!!

an old bloke who had lurchers all his life when i asked him many many years ago looks a bit big to me about one of his dogs replied son he can get down to his bowl of grub faster than any little un ive got in the kennel and i suppose he was right i know small lurchers tend to be able to turn on a sixpence but seen them run wide enough to have to have a airfeild as well and rio a big 27 tts bitch i owned used to turn on a sixpence as good as any little un i think its more down to agilaty and practice rather than size. although my ideal lurcher size would be 24 to 25 to the shoulder
