av got a first x collie greyhound and a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie, both coming along good...photo bucket wont let me in but when they do i will put some pictures up

cheers so far for the info. keep it coming. still like to know if the owners think say for example that there better day dogs then lampers or maybe the other way round. all info appreciated the more im tolled the more i can learn of the breed and preformance cheers lads.

My bitch was only used on the lamp until about a year ago which she excels at IMO but she took to day work like a natural, she's 6 now and had never seen a ferret or a rabbit in the day for that matter...I've had a few collie crosses and its their willingness to learn new things i find appealing, great dogs for the way i hunt these days...John

if im totally honest my boy is sh*t hot as a ferreting dog makes the days more enjoyable watching him work!!! on the lamp he has good days and bad as im sure all of us have!! but ferreting is what he excels at!!! i know thats not everyones cuppa tea but i suits me fine!!! cheers

do you think its true to his breeding or do you think its just his traits. so as ferreting goes hes mustard but lamping hes avarage. how old is he and has he had much work day or night. i know some of these questions seem pointless just helps me to get better picture.

Not sure if its his breeding or just his traits!! as i allways ran suluki type lurchers before this one!! down my way yor lucky if you get 20 runs in a night due to the small fields and generally they all congregate together in groups and as soon as you run one the rest get on there toes and head for cover !!that field over!! he catches alot more than he misses on the lamp ( or else i wouldnt keep him) and ive had some cracking nights with him!! but i have never been able to truly test his abilities on the lamp!! as for ferreting its were he started!! i started him ferreting at 8 months and he has got it down to a tee!! i use the dog to let me know whats happening!! almost like hes in charge and im the dope that has to set the nets and carry all the stuff!! hope this helps  sorry hes 2 now by the way!! and hes out as much as i can usally 3 or 4 nights a week lamping in season and weather permitting!! and ferreting every sunday

i get you. so hes def making the grade but you are yet to test his full abilities. what is he like on rabbits on the close to hedges or long runs. is it true in your books collie xs are to smart or is it people being a little unfair to the breed. like i said ive never seen one really work hence all the questions

the fields he runs are small and quick and the rabbits are off like a shot at the slightest sound!! he learned very quickly how to cut them out and not straight line them wich i put down to the collie brain!! only downfall is when hes tired and one is just slipping off into the hedgeline as hes approching he slows down!! wich in my books he shouldnt do as they may have got stuck or they may have even cornered themselvs in a panic!! and due too the lack of runs available i like to see every run made a good hard go of!! that i put down to being a bit to clever!! long runs i never have a problem with he goes wide of the beam like he does on most of his runs then cuts in if it slips away he turns back again wich is a good thing in my book as i dont want him hunting up!! if it wasnt for the brains he def wouldnt be as good a ferret dog as he is but it can get on my nerves somtimes!! hope this helps

cheers for the info lads really opening my eyes up to the breed. heard alot of stuff from non collie fans which is obveiously biased but good to hear off proper owners of the breed sounds very handy and maybe the people who have had problems with them is there own doing and not the dogs fault. keep it all coming

sounds really handy. and it seems hes using his brains to a possitive which is what you want and i like. what are they like in terms of feet and general health with lamping (as in is he injury prone or not strong feet or soft ect ect)

i think alot of the people who dont like the colliex!! actually find the dog is too clever for them and thats why they dont get on with them!! with a collie x ive found i have to be one step ahead all the time because hes allways pushing the boundries with me but i soon correct him and were back fine again till the next time!!! i like a challenge somthing that gets me thinking all the time!! and bringing him on from a pup had some real ups and downs but it all comes together in the end !! its almost like we know what each other is thinking when were out!! somthing i never had with my suluki xz all the best B Cooper

with regards to the feet hes 26" and wieghs 25kg he puts a lot of power down when he runs and i must admit he does do his toes somtimes!! not for a while now mind!! more when he wasin his first year!! as for feet i worked him in the frost and i had real trouble with his feet after that he does seem to cut from the back of the pad up to the due claw area quite regularly think this is more down to the way he stops and turns during runs!!! im still working out how good his feet are but so far ive had a few probs!! maybe unfortunate so far!! maybe theres a problem but ill be able to tell in time!!! all the best

Have you ever had a saluki/grey collie/grey they are imho one of the best all rounders. The ones i have seen and a 3 quarter grey/collie put back to a pure saluki i had was quite a decent dog.thumbs.gif

no i havent!! in fact i was taught collies were no good by the boys i was going out with in the early days and for a long time stuck with whatever they had bred i thought they knew best as you do when your younger they told me any thing with brains was no good!!!! it was only when i started to see an old family friend who had coursed and lamped most of his life pre ban!! and had now taken up gun dog training and and working on shoots !! that i was pointed in a diffrent direction and took on a collie xgrey on his advice and i really liked the cross and here i am now running the same dog two years later!! i would definatly try the cross you have mentioned at the moment i only have space for the one dog!! thanks

I know wat you mean. All our old type lurchers from over 30 years ago had a touch of collie in a lot of the very good ones and exelled at most tasks.I think alot of veiws on collie/greys was due to how plummer and hancock bulled them up to much in the early days and hancock in his advertisment in the early 80s claimed his to be the best collie lurchers in the world and outstanding courseing dogs.I dont think they realised that lads had been useing this cross and putting it back to other lurchers long before they set up the puppy farming enterprise and breeding good alround lurchers. Then the word bitza came up in a bid to make people think that two lurchers bred together were some how inferior to the half crosses and 3 quarter breds they were breeding atb dell

I 've kept most collie crosses for about fourty year's now and think the beardie cross is better than the border, the best all round lamper came off chuckles some years ago and was a 5/8 cross but for out in the daytime the threequarter take's whatever get's up or comes out the ground, the best dog I've owned died 20 yrs ago now and was first cross beardie/greyhound over a saluki/greyhound,this dog never let me down and would take any quarry day or night, still the fastest dog I've ever owned to date. The other traditional cross of the time was collie/grey over deerhound greyhound,a great allround dog that's good for end of dig as well, did'nt really show scar's,great coat, and good laid back attitude, alway's willing to please and could jump anything.I still own a threequarter cross now that has a very impressive tally to date and is a good all round bitch, she is out everyday with me and will retrieve live to hand day or night and is good on charlie, jump,s anything but still don,t like some of the sly collie trait's she has, jealousy of my other dog's being the worst, some threequarter collie crosses have poor feet, long toe's etc,you gotta take real care picking your pup or you get lot,s of broken toe's,some throw very close to the greyhound, overall given my own favourite it would be a lurcher/lurcher cross from two outstanding dog's that have been tested fully over at least 3 season's,my son has an eight month old pup from two such dog's that caught her first rabbit today while out mooching, even at her young age she is in a different class altogether than my threequarter,I am hoping to breed off my bitch this year when I find an exceptional dog of decent traditional breeding
