YOUR deluded if you think a whipet is faster than a grey, and whippets wil run round a day catching rabbits, you wil also get more courses out on hares in a day than you would with a grey

A pointless cross??? Christ, I can think of many that WOULD be well described as a pointless cross, that are forever getting dragged out the wood work, from your Akita's to your ABD's but never th

If you wanted to know about a breed/cross of dog why put "pointless." Because it sounds like a statement not a question. Anyway, do you want one? Now you know they are the "ultimate catch dog." :clapper:

when you cross them you will have the advantages of both breeds and the disadvantages, but you can never be sure which side will have the dominant gene for different attributes of each breed. for example first croses like bull - g hound, some throw there size to the dam and some to the sire, all depend on which has the dominant gene for the size-tts. theres every point in crossing two independant breeds , other wise we wouldnt have lurchers. different breeds make up different attributes for different people which suit there needs in a working dog and quarry and enviroment are the main factors for the selective breeding. it doesnt take a genius to know what benefits you get from crossing different breeds/lurchers.

Hi

In the eighties I had a proper whippet crossed greyhound from working stocks and it was, in my opinion, one of the best workers I have seen. It would take rabbit, squirrel, rat, hare and even caught the odd pheasant. He was a tough little cookie and it just naturally came to him with minimal training to hunt these down. He was exceptional because what ever he saw he would just naturally go for it. He was a one off who is much talked about within my family. Sadly missed fell to the big C (aged 12 years) as do many others.

He was very fast and could twist and turn on a sixpence and his pick up was spot on everytime. His skin didn't seem to tear like a whippets does nowadays he just seemed tougher.

I wouldn't hesitate to have one again and if it turned out like my old max I would be really chuffed.

Although i havent owned one myself ive seen a few run regularly, ive been resisting posting this but ill stick my neck out and say a true whippet x grey is probably the best catch dog in existance, that said the faults outweigh the plusses with this x,the lad who started this thread said "i wouldnt have one over my collie/grey" no chance mate in a million years could any f1 colliegrey compete with this x,i have had f1 collie/grey and its not even a contest.

thats the most backward comment ive ever seen!! if its the best catch dog ever seen and they so much better than collie x grey why ohh fookin why dont you own one man!! why are you settling for an inferior cross if this is the ultimate catch dog????? :hmm:

I bred the f1 collies for my eldest lads first dog, what dont you understand when ive said "the faults outweigh the plusses" but if i only had a choice of a collie/grey or a whippet/grey i wouldnt even have to think about it.

My present dog is whippet/grey x beddy/grey [mostly] whats that telling you?

it says to me you like to run dogs with more faults than plus's if we go on your last statement!! your only apparent saving grace is beddy if we are to go on what you have said so far about the whippet x greyhound!! how can you be of the opinion that you would rather run a dog with more faults than pluses!! why do you hate the collie x grey so much??? did one bite you??

I too would much rather run a first cross whippet/greyhound than a first cross collie greyhound. In theory anyhow. But.............you give me a 7/8 greyhound 1/8 collie and I would chose that over a whippet/greyhound any day. I might would run a 3/4 bred if they were fast enough to catch something.

The present dog is nothing like a whippet/grey mate and theres another ingrediant,i dont hate collie/greys i just know what they are and arent capable of,good base but not the finished article imo,way to much rubbish is talked about them.

mark my words 3/4 grey 1/4 collie crosses are fast enough to catch anythink in this country!!! tried and tested to the limit!!! nobody on this forum can truly doubt the 3/4 cross's lamping ability!!!

You might be right but I'd say it's a 50/50 chance cause I'd almost bet that alot of em are not fast enough to suit alot of folks on here.

Here`s a few reasons i can think of,some have already been said.Whippets are not stupid, readly use there noses,Will have a go at anything,But are handicaped by there size,A crosss with the greyhound brings up the size, with out becoming to big, and most importantly for lads that like to see a dog that runs its quarry at electric pace,You might call it do or die. There is no dilution of the speed.Personally i love to watch these dogs run,You might be home earlier, but every run would have been exciting. So while a whippet might be a rabbit specialist, cross it with a greyhound, you will get sport what ever pops up.Go and see one run even if you come back saying it wouldnt suit you,You will see why lads run em. As also said make a great dog to put back to your lurchers.

still not really swinging it for me!!! someones got to have a better argument than whats been put up so far????

i knew some 1 who used to own this x and it was a machine on foxe's and a realy good dog on rabbits,

better feet than a greyhound turn better than a greyhound, faster than a whippet and more speed than a whippet, qwick off the mark and good pace when in full flight i carnt see the problem with the x the 1 i seen was a very fast and could turn on a penny

speed is nothing when coursing if they dont have the brains to channel it and the stamina to hold it. And generally the faster the dog the less stamina you'l have. prefere a dog to pace him self through the night rather than destroying his lungs in under 20 runs. Which most straight sight hounds do
