Recommended Posts

hi guys

i have been asked by a landowner who i have been doing aload of vermin control for about sorting out a shoot! im after any advice you guys can help me with!! i have a basic no how! the land owner was asking:-

how many birds would he need to get for 6days about 50 to 100 bird days? there is about 600acers of land and 1 main wood and about 5 smaller spinnies and areas of newly planted trees.

which cover crops are the easies to grow and maintain?

any surgestion on putting covering plants in woodland to thicken out certain areas of the wood.

without seeing the land its very hard to give sensible advice mate.

is the land structured for driven days?

how big are the new plantations and how old?

covering plants in woods will grow if you open the canopy here and there.

easy to grow as cover is mustard( sewn after the harvest of the main crop) but will die off with hard frost(a plus point for the farmer as he wont have to cut it down).

have you thought of starting a little syndicate as this would help with the workload and make a more certain ammount for the farm(£ 400-500 a year in pact).if you offer a shoot day you will HAVE to produce the number of birds you have sold,if not then they wont come back.

i would try with a small syndicate for a couple of years, gain experiance of the land and its holding capabilities, how the drives work in differant weather etc etc etc.....

and then think of commercial days.

hllo, expect to loose 20%, so if he wantin 6x50-100 bird days buy in 800 imho,

the layout has to be adequate, to hold and drive birds. not much woodland from what you

described. birds like to roost out of the elements. do the neighbours hold shoots as you

could gain and lose birds,

p.s... most farmers i no will take the sugar oot ya tea, so run some costs by him first.

20 years back we were charging $31.50 + vat per bird,,,

You dont run a shoot do you Snorker? If he is lucky he should expect to shoot 50% of his birds and at that he will still be doing good. Only small shoots that are surrounded with large shoots would get antwhere near the stats' you are quoting.

NO DONT RUN ANY SHOOTS LABTASTC, BUT BEEN AMONG SYNDICATES SINCE I COULD CARRY A GUN. MY STATS ARE GOING

OFF WHAT I WAS MENTORED. AND THAT WERE ON ONE OF THE FINEST SHOOTIN ESTATES IN ENGLAND, AS I SAID WE EXPECTED TO LOOSE

20%, AND ALWAYS WORKED FROM THAT. I ONLY NO WHAT I NO , AND LIKEWISE WI YERSEL.

Load of bollocks. I've never known of a shoot to only loose 20% of the birds! Bearing in mind that a keeper doesn't often tell you how many birds he puts down so you will not get an answer to what he loses.

Try putting about 1500 birds down. Is there alot of woodland around? Bearing in mind pheasants need somewhere to roost. The main problem with maze is it takes alot of effort when it comes to re-planting etc and you need the machinery to do so etc. You will also have to calculate how much everything is going to cost you, supliers of feed, supliers of the poults, your budget, the price of the game crops, man hours, fuel, traps etc.

ive nothing to gain coming on here openly, and tryin to help the lad oot wi a little advice and feeding him shite,

i can only speak from experience, and what i was told, and worked by from the head keeper...

we put down 95,000 phes, and shot over 23 x 2 day shoots, averaging 3200 birds, these talleys dont lie,

and will be jotted down. then we ha cock day, and then culling cocks oot of the catchers..or sold em to small shoots. always had good shows of birds on the day, obviously nearer end of season, had to dog extra birds in, to make an drive.

facts. 95.000. - 20% = 76.000. - 23x3.200 = 73.600. =

19k lost to predators, straying, natural death, disease, poachers. (LOT OF)..

19,ooo birds is a lot. atb, snorker.

Better stick these FACTS up in your local paper mate and advertise yourself as the worlds best Gamekeeper, i am sure there will be land owners fighting over you to be there keeper? I am not writing this for an argument mate but if "anybody" took your advice on numbers of poults needed there shoot would be well and truly f***ed from day 1.

these FACTS are something we simply went from lab tastic, we put down an large volume of birds, and always got our return. i wouldnt think it advisory to advertise our wealth of birds in OUR LOCAL PAPER AS YOU STATE. as would surely attract wrongfull attention. we keepered the estate 24/7 and held our birds, sorry if you have an stigma with that.

regards SNORKER.

I knew a Head keeper who thought he was getting returns like that, mind you he had to take his shoes and socks off to count higher than 10 :toast:
