Guest Dale
seen a t.v programme of pure saluki's in arabia or somwhere like that on tv the other day , and they took hares rather easilly from quite long distances .. people have warned me away from the pure breed and said in favour of the crosses such as saluki / grey or saluki / bull / grey .. could i get a pure saluki of a decent working strain .. or is it just wishfull thinking? blando 0
are the Arab salukis better do people import them? The salukis I have seen have been so f****d up by the stupid kennel club standards they are useless ( they don’t even look the same as the Arab salukis) . Are there many people with decent non ped salukis, or are some peds good? Quote Link to post
JackWilliams 1
They are decent. The father of my Saluki x Wippet/bull, was a monster. Hares and foxes were no problem. ill try to find a picture of him. nice dogs. Quote Link to post

minion 29
Hi Bud, I have only ever seen one pure saluki working and it belonged to Paul Sager, who i believe was fairly successful with pure Saluki's. I only met him once but he was very plesant. This was about seven or eight years back, but he came up to Brian Plummers kenels when i was there and we ended up taking his pup ferreting Nr Abington. The pup was eight months old and caght a bolted rabbit. It retrieved almost to hand. I was fairly impressed, but have never seen another pure Saluki since. Quote Link to post

Didnt the pup accidentally retrieve his ferret aswell or something? Pure saluki , they are a running machine, plenty of stamina, they just don,t come back, they will drive you mad. 1st crose is ok,. You cant say that about all salukis if you had one from a pup and brought the pup on correctly you would have know bother. Its how you treat and understand the breed. Quote Link to post

tyson 1
i saw a 15month old pure saluki demolish 3/4 long ears in january (pre-ban of course) and it was in north yorkshire so it wasnt exactly fen , and i know the half sister ran in the forley cup at 14months old and kille hares , she done quite well considering she was a pup and running against seasoned top stuff. they are out of working strain and are as fast as most saluki hybrids. probly fastest strain of pures ive ever saw and the sire was meant to be faster than the bitches so looks like he past his speed on. not all salukis are fast and not all saluki hybrids are fast all depends on the sire and the dam and where there broke in for coursing also helps , small fields helps sharpen them up Quote Link to post
Lennard 10
There are some good salukis out there...looks are variable...and if the dog and master trained eachother well they will respond and come back...some people have imported native "salukis" but often they will/may not hunt them... check out the newsletter of desertbred.org for some native hounds... Ha Steve, hoe meer landgenoten hoe beter...welke lijn saluki heeft U? L Edited November 6, 2007 by Lennard Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
I firmly believe that you have to be a certain sort of person to get on with Salukis (and some of their hybrids). Forget about robot obedience etc, and don't expect a Saluki to grow any sort of brains until it's at least 12 months old. They are very slow to mature both physically and mentally. I've only had the one but she worked very well with the terriers out bushing. Friends who own and work them tell me that you just can't bully them into doing anything. In other words you need a lorra lorra patience. Personally I think they are fantastic hunting dogs and brought up right will take all game in all places: the secret is in the rearing and entering: no the sort of dog to leave in a kennel and expect miracles: they do best living with you 24/7.
