Wheeler Nuttal or Nuttall Stevens

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, i'm not the greatest poster here but i have to ask;

Are all the terriers for sale on here, especially black and the infamous chocolate or liver coloured dogs

all wheeler or Stevens X Nuttall, it really does seem that anyone wanting to sell or bragg about a dog just has to state

that its bred this way.

I have had dogs direct from Mr Nuttall in the dim and distant past and he's lines were known for throwing the occasional

white or if you prefer "Russell type", there was even the occasional tri colour

but liver coloured terriers were a rarity as far as i know

I dont know much about Nicks line other than they were always black, or so i have been told.

Dereks lines were known for the large amount of bull blood, sometimes as much as a quarter bred

and the stature of these terriers obviously carried the bull gene.

My point is, how many litters have these guys ( Nuttall excluded) bred for there to be so many of these terriers out there.

My own feeling is that its the biggest case of name dropping ever and that i for one will want absolute proof

of a dogs lines before i take on another "branded" terrier as it would seem to be along the lines of "just serviced by my mate"

" it had a clutch a thousand miles ago" " the cheque is in the post" or "of course i wont i'll pull it out before i do"

Rant over :big_boss:

From what i understand, without speaking to the terriermen you mention in person i am told by many other terriermen of 15 years+ that they are all bred down from Frank Buck and Cyril Brey lines meaning that they are all related and that only goes back about 90 years and a dog is bred once it is proven at 4 years old then that is only just over 20 generations, so differencec in appearence will occur. The line is bred to stay and that is why people buy in to it because there is a better chance of it working as a pest control dog and being a stayer.

Well your right, wasn't much of a rant but i carried it on today while i was out for a little wander around the shoot

The fella i do most of my digging with had a good comment, he bought two pups from B Nuttal around 1980 ish and Nuttal was buying in

litters then, so although there is a bit of nuttals breeding in there way back how much of everything else has been lumped in as well along the way

in all the time that has passed to the terriers that people call Nuttal bred now?

The same goes for D wheelers stuff, unless its direct off him and you find someone else who has had stuff direct of him to breed with then the strain takes a dilution, and so on along down the line.

A dog with wheelers breeding three or four generations back should not be called a wheeler bred dog, imho.

I know very little about N Stevens breeding, so i can only say thanks to Burnie69 for the info, i personally feel that the colour of a terrier

doesn't matter so long as it does the job, but the chocolate fellas must taste good as it seems that every one wants one, on here at least.

Anyway, i would definately suggest that any one wanting a terrier with a "name" gets complete proof of its breeding as all this name dropping is a total sham

unless you can prove it by way of written breeding with the actual dogs to back it up.

And by the way is it me or is a dog with nettle stung feet just the funniest thing you have ever seen :laugh:
