for a spring rifle: something from the HW range, maybe a hw97k or hw77k, or anything in between. for good scopes avoid SMK and go for a nice hawke scope and if your on a budget then JSR.

for a pcp ridle then a air arms s200 or s400. although you will need a stirrup pump or dive tank for these as they need filling up with air. the plus side of this is that they are recoilles and much easier to achieve accuracy with than springers.

hw77k= £330

jsr 3-9X40 IR= £30

TOTAL: £360

AA s200= £350

jsr 3-9x40= £30

fx stirrup pump:£110

TOTAL= £490.

bearing in mind that the AA S200 will be a lot easier to shoot than a spring rifle. but i've used a hw77k and there very nice to shoot.

Why avoid SMK Aaron :hmm:

Mine is superb :gunsmilie: and you've seen the results that baby produces.

Just because they are cheap, does not make them useless. Granted some earlier goods were less than satisfactory, but the Model XS series (Mine is the XS-19) is certainly fantastic value for money and its a very good all rounder that hits as hard as most guns three times the price. Come to think of it, its more powerful than my S200 (must get a chrony and up the power of the S200)

The only reason I dont use it as much now is its impractical to do anything but snipe over the warrens until the foliage grows again to offer me cover when standing. Then its back to using the Beast :boogie:

 :11:

Perhaps if He'd used capital letter at the start of the sentance I would not need to goto specsavers :tongue2:.

Nah I wasn't having a go at Aaron  (I'm usually the one defending him from some of the :wankerzo4: 's on here

My most sincere appologies if it came accross like that  I'm just sticking my oar in for the sake of debate

However, my beast has a 3-9x40 SMK mildot scope sat on top that is pretty good except at the higher mag where the image becomes a little milky. And yes I will be changing it soon for a betterone :D So I'm in partial agreement with Aaron about the scope.

hi lads

the way i look at things some of the cheapest gear does just as good a job as the most expensive..

I.E my scopes tasco's 6x24x50 cost about 32 quid and do the same job as the most expensive same as the ts45 zini had given you can probably pick one up for about 50 quid and that to will take out quarry its not how much it cost its will it do the job.....

Yes I have to agree with Tony and Gary on this one.

Cost of kit isn’t the issue here pal.

As Gary said some of the cheapest shooting equipment is just as good as the most expensive kit if you know what you are doing with it and apply the correct science behind your sport.

I also use a Tasco 6-24x50 AO mil dot which costs around 30 odd-ish pounds from EBay but it still works fine for me and I have had quite a few clean kills with it mate.

Some of the SMK equipment now is really good and works just as well as some of the more expensive brands like Hawke, Nikko Stirling and Simmons.

I think there is an idea portrayed by shooting magazines these days that people need to have a rifle like a Daystate Air Wolf with a Hawke Sidewinder to be a good air rifle hunter.

They seem to portray that if you have an expensive rifle and scope that you will hit everything you shoot at, Not so.

I would say that a person that can shoot a springer very well and has practiced lots at different ranges (say a SMK newer model using a SMK scope) would beat someone with a Daystate Air Wolf and Hawke Sidewinder, if the person using the Daystate wasn’t an accomplished shot at all ranges and hasnt practiced lots.

I’ve seen Gary go out hunting with his old Air Arms Pro Sport (a very gun springer granted) with other guys using top brand PCPs and shoot more than them on more than one occasion.

I think its just down to the individual using the equipment and his skill as to how he applys the science of shooting (ballistics etc) to his sport.

I bought a 6-24x50AO tasco off ebay as it was cheap while I saved up for a more expensive scope, that was two years ago and it hasn't come off the gun for the money its spot on and I find the reticule excellent hold over, under

Yes Bill,

I agree with you there pal.

In some situations i think that the scope is more important than the rifle.

The Germans are not allowed to lamp at all for any game.

They cant use NV either to make the shot, just spot the game with it.

So what they do is sit in the high chairs and shoot the boar and deer using ambient light from the moon and stars.

In this situation a very expensive scope with really good multi coated lenses are required or the target isnt seen.

A German hunter once told me that his scopes cost 2 times what his rifles do.

They were all Swarovski Z6 scopes costing over 1500 euros per scope.

I think for us though, people who only shoot to 55 metres max, plus with a lamp at night to illuminate the quarry dont need to pay for a dead expensive scope mate.

Just my opinion, but its a interest debate anyway.
