Guest 2GOOD
i like a dog that has drive, seen so many dogs jog half the lamp with rabbits next to the hedge and turn back, makes my blood boil just because a dog wont run at rabbits next to the hedge dont mean they have no prey drive it just means there brainy, why fight a endless battle.we all know that some of them come back in to the field but more of them get through.my dog does it and at times you think stop pissing about and run that beam but it aint that bad because she picks squaters out of the seat just walks to them a dog that runs the beam flat out will be tired quicker than the one that walks so i can live with missing the odd one on the edge just my oppinion exactly, especialy at the end of the season non come back into field they know exactly where they going. a dog that wont go to a rabbit thats close to the hedge is not being clever, because they are some of easyest to catch FLINT08 Are you for real.Any dog with half a brain would never attempt to run a hedge rabbit.Maybe the question we should ask.Has your dog got more brains that you and you say its bad to crab another man or his dog ,your just unbelievable .i see also you know NOTTHING after all these years . Talking about the best way to lamp is not Crabbing or cant you tell the diferance has your dog got more brains than you , now where has lamping got to do with that .or am i missing some thing , Quote Link to post
anton 0
A dog that has lots of prey drive and so uses its brains to put the game in the bag. Prey drive isnt just about running really fast and not letting anything get in the way. Prey drive is surely about doing what it takes to catch and if there is an easier way of doing it, dog should take that option and also know when its just not going to happen. No point wasting energy on pointless runs. Down to the owner to know whats good to run and when to slip. jmo. atb jai. I reckon prey drive is the speed and heart to catch and prey sense is the ability to learn how to catch if you know what i mean you won't get far putting a drag racing car on a f1 track cheerio anton Quote Link to post

boyo 1,398
over the last 40 odd years mine have caught plenty of hedge rabbits the secret is knowing which ones to slip on and which ones to leave alone .the ones with the ultimate prey drive will catch plenty on the hedge the ones that run clever and want to pick their rabbits willnot at the end of the day its each to their own but i know which i prefer . but its good that were all dfferant. colliejohn 840
I put a similar topic up on another site several years ago, the response showed todays style of the way lads use their dogs, being point and aim, to me there,s nowt clever having a dog that runs at 100mph at anything that moves, a dog that runs like this will have a very short working life, you see not many lads use their dogs for mooching, bushing, and ferreting, alot of lads just prefer to lamp which isn,t rocket science, just switch your lamp on, slip your dog and thats it, it,s easy not much training, thats the way the lurcher scene as gone, and many of the lads use dogs that are saturatred with greyhound blood, and as we all know most greyhounds have a very high prey drive, i prefer a dog that isn,t saturated with greyhound blood, say at tops percentage wise say no more than 40 percent greyhound blood, i like a dog what as a brain and knows how to use it, a dog that can work situations out and use it to their advantage, i do quite abit of ferreting and i like a dog to be able to work a warren, and use its brain to anticipate were a rabbit is undreground and anticipate the bolt, alot of land i work my dogs on is covered with limestone paving which is deadly for a dog that runs at 100mph, a dog with brains, knows how to work this type of land, and knows when to slow down or pull up on this type of ground, i,m not knocking a dog which has plenty of prey drive but they ain,t for me, as long as a dog as enough speed to get up to the rabbit, and as the agility as well i,m happy, but brains is definately a necessity. regards collie john. whin 463
you cant beat bolting rabits next to coursing its great sport but you need adog with savvy and balls sometimes ,i had aguy up with adog once a fast looking machine but would not hit the nettelsor lie in them to catch a bolting rabbit were my bitch would go any were to pull them out , i like watching aclever dog that catches in all sorts of situations ,lamping rabbs to me isnt apatch on agood days bolting rabs to good dog or dogs and good ferrets , great sport Quote Link to post
boyo 1,398
this has turned out quite a good thread as i thought it would when i put it up and it also shows how lots of us like a differant type of running dog which again is good because it would be a boring old world if we all owned and ran the same kind of dog thats what makes the lurcher so unique to other breeds of dog the big variation in looks and type. in the dogs themselves and the people who own them. fieldsman 51
i like a dog that has drive, seen so many dogs jog half the lamp with rabbits next to the hedge and turn back, makes my blood boil just because a dog wont run at rabbits next to the hedge dont mean they have no prey drive it just means there brainy, why fight a endless battle. we all know that some of them come back in to the field but more of them get through.my dog does it and at times you think stop pissing about and run that beam but it aint that bad because she picks squaters out of the seat just walks to them a dog that runs the beam flat out will be tired quicker than the one that walks so i can live with missing the odd one on the edge just my oppinion exactly, especialy at the end of the season non come back into field they know exactly where they going. ffs you never seen a dog turn a rabbit from a hedge my whippet catches loads next to the hedges turns them straight into the field easy as that. if i had a dog that did it, well lets just say it would go to a better place. also why would the dog tire if you have give them plenty of road work and field work to increase there stamina nothing like a fit dog i think all dogs will run at them by the hedge if there close enough im meaning if its a long slip and there by the hedge, and its obvious a dog will tire more running it does you thick c**t how ever much work it has done or how much stamina it has got,you must have some very good dogs if yours dont who's the thick c**t, its common sense if it looks as if its wondering looking to find its way in the hedge dont slip but if you keep the lamp underneath him and he's plodding about slip the dog, you all talk the talk on here, if a lived close i'd show half You arse holes how to do it. if your dog is picking its own runs burie the fuker start agian. im not saying my dog totaly chooses its runs, it will go to every rabbit i tell it to. obviously if it chose all its runs id be sick as f**k lol. what i mean is it wont go darting up to every rabbit thats not running but trot up the beam or even out the beam and then back in and try to sneak up on it if it is by the fence but this far in the season the rabbits know exactly what they are doing. as well as being quater collie she is also quater beddy so there is plenty of drive there and she wont think twice about diving into rough after summet, but she wont if she doesnt think she has a chance of getting it. first fox she seen, a big dog about november time, she coursed it got it, give it a bit shake and obviously with it been her first thort it was enoguh, the fox played dead for bout 30 seconds then turned round, bit her and took off under a fence and into the river which had burst its banks. she was straight over the fence and into the river after it and swam to the middle where the fox was been swept by the unbelieviably strong current. she was fighting with it while been swept down the river, lucky for the fox it hit a different current and got swept to the other side, my dog swam against the current to get accross but obviuosly fox was gone by this time. after a few minutes search she returned and jumped straight back in with out a second thort and made it back accross about quater mile down stream, i was shitting me self thought she would surely drown. now hows that for drive? she then went on to kill two hares and was inches off another fox going into a wood. she was 16 month at the time and she only 21 and half tts. i just think that constantly slipping on rabbits at the edge sickens a dog. I agree a good way to ruin adog and kill any drive it had in the first place Quote Link to post
genuine 81
Well ive had a good think about, and i would go for pre-drive. Ive had a few lurchers in the last 25years.[bullxs,colliexs,bitza's] and ive been lucky that most of them would give 120% on any quarry. The dog i have now Bryn will bust a gut to catch a rabbit, and that's how i want it. If they get a few bangs giving 120%,well its name of the game, and after all they are working dogs. And any dog running at 30-40 mph day+night, will get a few bangs. No a [trier not a thinker ] I only had to read one page to see if anyone had put something similar to me and i belive this bloke hit the nail on the head!
