dillan 19
Managed to get an hours ratting after work before it got dark. I use this pig farm weekly with air rifle to keep the rats down. Have tried a couple of times with terriers with little success as the rats tend to live in the cavities and run the beams and rafters. However after a few weeks lay off due to my guns in for MOT, a few rat holes were starting to appear around the sheds. So out with 2 young bitches to keep their hand in produced a bag of 9, however they did miss more than they caught as it was tough going with all the junk etc, it wasn`t their day, rats seem to be bolting whilst they had their attentions elsewhere. Having said that I was well pleased with them, Bess got most of the praise this time as she soon learned if she stood still at the entrance to hole she just marked, head back and waited for rat to pop its head out, with a quick strike she nailed it, it was a joy to watch, 3 times she did it. Any way got dark and out with air guns. Shot 19 and my nephew shot 14 before leaving as the cold really started biting. What amazes me about this place is that between me and the Apprentice we have been shooting one night a week for months religiously, usually a dozen to 2 dozen apiece, come back following week and theyve been replaced. May it continue, having a lot of fun. ATB Dillan Quote Link to post

pointer 543
Why not lamp them with the terriers, better sport then the guns id much rather catch rats at night with dogs but guns are usually far more effective.you can pick them off all night long if you wanted to. plus alot of rats will never give dogs a chance of catching them due to where they live. on the estate where myself and half and half have been going we do what we can with the dogs around the release pens, game crops etc but weve been shooting them most weeks at other spots where only the dumbest rodents would get snapped up,they would see the dogs a mile off. good going dillan, ratting is great fun with dog or gun Quote Link to post
Keeps 403
nice work dillan, we've been going to a place like that recently, the dogs have to work hard for their rats Quote Link to post

dillan 19
Thanks for replies guys. I have considered lamping at night with terriers, but feel there are too many hazards about this place, sharp machinery etc. The 2 bitches in question are half sisters, father being Wyremead Kraken, mothers are from Coalville Billy lines and Eire lines. Night vision, I use a compact Sony handy cam which is fitted to the scope, I observe with the view finder. The digi cam has facilities for night vision but with limited distance so I use an infra red filter on the lamp to extend viewing up to 50yrds away easily in pitch black. Had to resort to this as the rats were very lamp shy after a while despite using various colours of filters. Beauty about this is I can record all action or take photos. The rats are totally unaware of me being there as there is no light thrown around them making them edgy. I have compiled a library of shots taken onto a dvd to look back on with some spectacular shots.I have to say that my figures have certainly gone up since using this type of night vision compared to normal lamp. I use this method simply because I just happen to have the right camera for the job and before you ask, no I cant afford a descent proper night scopes. Cheers Dillan Quote Link to post

Cheers Dillan Glad to hear that Kracken has continued his genes! his sister Harlow has offspring with superb noses. If you do breed try linebreeeding to that Kracken line and you will get some "real" hunters but with bad coats. His sire Luca was given back to me as he was to "hot " and easily found scent and hunted deaf!.. .First time i let Luca have free rein he found a deer scent and shot of within minutes of being let go. Unreal! WYREMEAD LUCA Years ago lamping terriers at rat was my "thing"... nightly(every night!) ,,have also lamped foxes with a pack of 6 plummers along the banks of the river wyre estuary (behind the rat pitch mentioned)...great fun as the foxes stopped and watched the pack close in ..never caught any but was close once or twice. The estuary at Fleetwood holds foxes in abudance ..once shone a lamp to show my brother just how many and one sweep of the lamp saw 9 sets if eyes. Quote Link to post
stormyboy 1,352
Thats cheating, using a lamp! I hunted my pack in moonlight-sounded great in the woods, baying like little hounds. Never caught any foxes but scared a few! They did nail the odd rabbit and had a couple of brushes with some slower, bulky things-a bit hairy in the dark with just a little torch. All good fun though.
