220 yard doe

I was out this morning and managed a nice shot on a doe at 220 yards , she went straight down without even a kick....

 

 

Still some white stuff about Foxdropper , winter still claiming casualties

 

 

 

Look where charlie has been having a nibble......

Nice one FH Charlie has had a good winter so far plenty to eat, there's nothing better than the sound of a big THUD from the Roe or Charlie

Thats a great shot mate and I've taken deer at that distance and more. When everythings in place and right it can be done.(its not a shot for the faint hearted)(or novice). But what would you say your limit is??

Not a dig in anyway mate I'm just curious.

Hi John , my limit is about 250 yards but I have shot out to around 300 before.

 

I only take these shots when it is impossible to get any closer due to the topography of the ground.

Great shot - Althought the bullet drop on a .243 probably isn't that much it's still a question of hitting a her in the right spot and its a small picture that far away. The wind would surely have a lot to do with the decision $ shame about the livestock, must be pretty upsetting for the farmer and all. Is that another set of horns behind the sheep in the wire?

In all my years of stalking, I have only shot two deer at over 180-240 yards. Only because I could not get any closer. Make a duff shot, as we all have, and you will have severe problems making a good second shot/following up etc. Spend the time to get close is the whole point of deer stalking; most of mine are shot at some 60- yards.

I would agree with you my long shots were cull animals and just couldn't get nearer I limit clients to 120m's and its usually less than 80m's

most of my deer have also been shot at or under 100m.as this is a distance i'm happy with. i know of a fair few who are "happy" to shoot much further( and i have followed up on some apalling shots from them too ).

 

range work is a good indication of your capability with the rifle but shooting game is as we all know different(exact range,uneven ground/rest and excitement).i am also not having a pop and am very pleased that you brought a clean shot on,i would just like to poi t out to those who do not have as much experiance/practice that these shots are not the norm for most of us and that they should only be "tried" when you can put 10 out of ten rounds on a saucer( relative to the vital zone) at the range you are considering AND MORE.

p.s. once again i'm not having a "holyier than though moment" and i'm aware that lots of stalkers shoot regularly at these ranges and more.its not the norm and not "easy".

I never said that this was the norm but on this occasion it was impossible to get closer to the deer. I think it boils down to each individuals confidence and ability , I wouldnt advocate a shot at that distance to someone who is not confident or experienced.

 

I also know people who shoot deer at extreme range but thats another subject , each person has to decide on the day whether to take the shot or not .

 

I am comfortable with this shot and wouldnt hesitate to take the same shot again today , it puts more deer in the larder

Nothing wrong with that at all. Last year I shot a huge Roe doe at about 240 yards. BTW .308 is quite capable of dealing with those kind of shots. I had a nice stable position, but I dithered about taking the shot for some 20 minutes...But, maybe, it might just give the wrong idea to some. Deer killing at long ranges is not stalking. Maybe I could shoot more deer at 300+ yards; yet I would never consider taking that kind of shot. As a previous poster has stated, what you can do on the range does not equate to what is needed in the field.
