Blaser R8- useful innovation, or expensive waste of R&D money?

Hi all,

Just reading through a shooting mag today and I have seen the New Blaser R8 with detachable mag/trigger group that they have brought out, I though I might ask you all for an opinion on it, personally I feel it is a a waste of time offering no real benefit over the R93, possibly being a disadvantage as it gives you the possibility of losing a (expensive and vital) part of the rifle. Anyways, I'll write the pros and cons below and see what you guys think on the subject!

 

For

detachable mag- "safer" in some peoples eyes as the ammo can be loaded into the rifle at the last minute- no carrying live ammo in the rifle under a closed bolt and empty chamber.

 

novelty value- something new and a talking point

 

blaser accuracy

 

Against

something to lose that will be (knowing blaser) extreemly expensive to replace, especially as it includes the trigger group

 

just another detachable mag rifle- no real advantage over any other

 

more room to get dirt in the gun and trigger assembly

 

same speed of reloading as the R93 especially if driven shooting and topping off the rifle directly through an open bolt- I would have thought that given blaser prices, people are going to be unwilling to buy another mag/trigger assy

 

Price! £££££!!

 

well there you have it, my evaluation of the rifle- perhaps I'm not giving ot a fair chance, but as you might be able to tell, I feel Blaser have wasted their R&D Euros on this one...

To be honest I'm not a fan of the Blazers and don't spend much time looking at them.

 

I see this more as a personal preference type of thing rather than a technological leap into the future!

 

Horses for course and personal decision...but with the usual Blaser price tags I expect!!

I had the R93 a gem of a rifle, had the barrels too, quick detach cost me a fkin fortune £3***+ barrels were £600 each s/h !!

 

all in all a well made gun, the R93 ,shot good too . But for preference i sold the job lot to a weathy sportman, who felt more comfertable with expensive wood & i retained the calibers in 223 6.5 300 in Browning A bolt, at a fraction of the cost & with better results, yep you got it here 1st .

 

So R93 value for ££££

Not knocking any one elses choice of rifle, but had quite a few makes in the past, now have two R93 and cannot fault them especially in the accuracy stakes.

 

The R8 looks interesting but I would not rush out to part exchange my R93 s for this new model.

I saw the new R8 by the gun dealer here in Denmark.

The extra magazine is very expensive (about 370 £ over here), but for me, the worst was that the magazine was in some kind of plastic case, so it would take very long time to change it and then the advantage with an extra clip magazine is gone.

I'll stick to my old R93 offroad.

I'll stick to my old R93 offroad.

 

oh, so the magazine in an extra insert inside the removable trigger mechanism? isn't that similar to the R93? where the magazine is a plastic insert?

No the magazine and the trigger mechanism is in one peace, but the extra magazine wich you will carry in your pocket is having a small plastic boxs over the magazine part, so everytime you will change your magazine, you have to remove the plastic part form your spare magazine, remove the original magzine,put in the new magazine and then put the small plastic part over the ole magazine before you put it in your pocket.

Its to avoid dust and dirt to get into the mechanism.

I hope you can understand what im trying to say, but as you found out,English is not the most easy language for me

The r93 and r8 are both magnificent rifles and is the merkel at half the price. You have failed to list the benefits or small disadvantages of both. Own one shoot it and you will quickly see why thet are far better than anything ever been made. Chalk and cheese no brainer.
