trouble with the runt

Recommended Posts

hi every one, ok well i got 2 pups from a litter, a bitch which i chose and a dog runt of the litter that i took on because it could not be re-homed.

not the bitch is fine, brilliant dog, but the runt is really stand off ish, when i take dogs out for a run about it just stands back and does nothing, every now and again it interacts with the other dogs, and then when its time to get him on lead he runs off and wont come, when i eventually get him to come to me i hold him while i get lead round him but he helps like he's being battered, and i mean yelps. sometime i just let go because it sounds so bad.

and if he's pulling on lead and i give him a gentle tug he acts like I've just booted him. this pup has never been hit or beaten.

i'm giving it a bit of time see if i can get it better but if not its going to a pet home which i have on standby, as i cant see it ever making a good working dog. and its a shame because it sits to hand command, comes straight back to whistle, (unless its time to go) and generally very obedient

is this because it is the runt and all the other pups used to batter it??

will it ever get out of being scared of touch??

will it ever make a working dog???

anyone had problems with runt?? (i know alot dont take them on but surely someone has)

thanks all

I had a beardie/border lurcher that did the same, it can be embarrassing and frustrating....but i give it plenty of time and encouragement..it took a while but ended up been one of the best dogs i ever had, only time will tell ,but it certainly paid off for me. Patience is the key...very early days yet.ATB.

Have the vet check him out for your own piece of mind mate may have a damaged neck?.I've found that the runt can be best of litter.Put him on and off lead several times during the walk and before the walk ends.Good luck with him,a very nice dog P1
