johnboy19 38
Right, I have a BSA Lightning XL Tactical in .22. Im thinking about getting a gas ram in it, has anyone got or had one in their Lightning (or any other gun)? Would just like to know what you think of it and if its worth it or not and if its recommended. From the posts i've seen about them they do look good. Also, it looks like you can get 2, AWT & Theoben, is any one better than the other? Think i read somewhere they are both made by the same people. Cheers, John Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
Not sure on gas rams pal, but what i can advise you on is phone Tony Wall at Sandwell Field Sports in West Bromich and get it tuned by him instead of sticking a gas ram in pal. Read this Despite not having any feedback on my original question I decided to get my 177 Lightning XL tuned at Sandwell Field Sports. My reasons being 1. that there was far too much twang noise from the spring, 2. too lively, even for a light 177rifle it just seemed to recoil more than any other rifle at the club 3. It was so hard to get a pellet into the barrel i had to use a pellet seating tool. 4. My relatives gave me the movey for Christmas Before the tune the gun was producing just under 11 ft/lb using Webley Mosquito Express. The purpose of the tune was not to increase power but to solve my reasons above and just make the whole thing smoother to operate. I collected the gun last week ( the gun was ready for collection after 9 days) On arrival Tony explained that my spring guide was damaged and had been replaced with a better one. He had also replaced original spring with a better quality one. Much of the tune involves polishing all rough surfaces and removing all sharp edges that may impair efficiency/consistancy. So the inside of the cylinder, surfaces of the piston, cocking lever, cocking slot, parts of trigger, breech port were all polished. The breech end of the barrel now has a very slight tapered lead in so i can push pellets in easily. The front stock screws were also replace with allen bolts The whole lot then re-lubed and re-assembled with great care. These are just the things that i can remember from those he told me I was invited to test it in their range set up in the roof space of the shop. Wow... what a difference i noticed as the guy fired the first three shots. Even within the confines of a small metal roofed range i could tell the gun was quieter, no twang. I thumbed in an air arms pellet so easily that i no longer need the pellet seating tool...fantastic Three of my five shots formed a single ragged hole group, i was chuffed to bits. Next day i took it to the club Despite the weather being awful (gusty wind and drizzle) I got the gun roughly zeroed at 30 yards. Its a completely different rifle. quieter, easer to load and smoother in every aspect. After being chono'd (producing 11.65 ft/lb using Webley Mosquitos) i took it around the course. I some how managed to beat the personal best of the guy whos been advising me how to shoot springers. If anyone is thinking of getting their gun tuned can thoroughly recommend Sandwell Field Sports. It was £50 well spent. Cheers Nigel I hope this helps pal. His tunes now cost £60 but well worth every penny Si Quote Link to post

andyfr1968 772
Hi, mate. I've a Lightning with a ram fitted and while it did do a fair bit to address some of it's issues, twangs, vibration, recoil, it did nothing to cure the crap trigger and general rubbish build and finish on the gun. Have a look at the Sandwell tune, by all means. I've always said you can't polish a turd but I'm happy to be proved wrong! Good luck with it, mate. Cheers. Edit to say... AWT make the rams for Theoben. They are exactly the same thing. Edited February 11, 2010 by andyfr1968 Quote Link to post

R0G3R 11
I have a gasram in 3 of my guns. Takes away alot of recoil, a little bit of noise and helps alot with accuracy. Roger! Quote Link to post
air gunner 0
Yep I have one in my supersport i think they are roughly the same gun anyway I think they are great! Different recoil that is easier to controll plop a decent silencer on and the sound is pretty decent. I think donnyc was selling one for an XL on the sale section for a great price... Also great guy to deal with. Quote Link to post
