john robbo 30
Well I have been looking and thinking which way we will go this coming season. I love good old kale and would have it but we grow alot of rape and it suffers very much from flea beetle(spraying costs to high). I also have looked into kale hybrids. We are at preasant sown up with mainly Chicory which will be into its 3rd year. It was good cover last year but has no feed value and gets barren by mid dec. So I think i'm going to chop and plough half the strips and plant maize and sorgum along side the chicory. And put a kale hybrid + kale blend into the flushing areas. This being early drilled if it fails to produce a crop I'll drill it all with maize/sorgum at the end of may. The only thing is that will cost me twice to drill it+ seed. Quote Link to post
rowey 1
We have maize, chicory (2nd and 3rd year) and triticale side by side in certain game crops and it works a treat. Maize has obvious food value but attracts rats as you will know. The triticale is still up now and I'm a big fan. It holds pheasants well but partridge better and it's great for working your dogs. This year we may try some millet but we're in a stewardship scheme so we're limited. (they won't let us put maize in) Look at GCWT website. They are on the ball Edited February 12, 2010 by rowey Quote Link to post
