Ideation 8,216 Posted February 11, 2010 Report Share Posted February 11, 2010 A lot of good replies here but its difficult to stop the youngesters they beleive in hunting all year round and its caused some arguments in this house i can tell you. I must admit ive never ever beleived deer was a legitimate quarry for a dog and i was never bothered about catching hares even when it was legal. So to continue on butchering them in the close season is more than a pointless exercise its cruel. sorry lads but its a point of view and thats why this forum is here i hope you respect that and dont get abusive :notworthy: :thumbs: :clapper: Well said! We have a few rabbits around us and i dont take them during the summer but on the other hand i have to hammer one bit of permisson to keep the numbers of bright eyes down Magwitch and I stop ferreting but have occasional forays out with the rifle and 4x4,to control rabbits in the orchards keeping the farmer sweet. Not enjoyable but necessary. There are those who run dogs all year round and say "Just giving the pups a run to build up their confidence ",etc. The same people ran through the foot and mouth ban , observe no close season,give no law ,and usually are running dogs out of the back of a van,being considerate and not disturbing the farmer by telling him they are coming. some speech . . . Not a speech an observation. I take it you disagree. I read one of your posts ,you state rabbits in England are easier to catch than in Ireland. Your profile says you are a 15 year old boy. Magwitch and I try to leave a balance ,enough rabbits culled to keep the farmer happy,with a nucleus to breed up for next year,but then we are not being paid for our efforts.Places on farms where last season we took 40/50's now yield 10/ 20. If we did it for a living no doubt we would have to be more ruthless. I came down hard on Luke because I have read some of his posts in the ferreting section,he comes across as a know all, smart mouth to me.Telling a lad he must have bad dogs because they were for sale,[the lad had a marriage break up],and was reluctantly offering them to a good home. Gloating over us "Sad Brits", being only able to run rabbits,putting fingers up emoticions ,does not endear people to me. I too, judge people on how they act, not their birth certificate,act like a smart arse kid ,and I treat you like one. No reverse ageism from me here. Magwitch and I take youngsters out from time to time,after all, they are the future of the sport. Age does not necessarily bring wisdom true ,but it should bring experience, and, hopefully, politeness. PS. How about a reprint of the book? Can't get it! This post was a response to Chalk Warren. Unless bringing on a young dog or doing pest control i personally think working rabbits etc out of season is not sport, why would anyone want to kill a pregnant doe....i know this can happen in season...but why seek to do it out of season....you should respect your quarry. And I do stress the word MAN,...and in saying this,...I would award this title to anyone who can think for himself,.regardless of his actual age Facts are,..unlike the ownership of a gun,...there is no legislation to stop anyone obtaining a running dog,.and running it,.... Quite how one behaves with such a lethal tool at one's disposal, is entirely a voluntary matter,.and whilst some lads get their thirst for blood quenched at an early age,..and act accordingly,..a few others never experience enough success,.and simply keep on at it. It is a true to state that 'great age does not always bring great wisdom',...and I've known men who have been at this hunting game for 50 years,.and are just as fecking stupid now,...(if not more so )..than they were when they started AS a paid rabbit controller,..NOW is the best time to hit the rabbits hard... Population wise, they are at their lowest ebb,.and are vulnerable to attack from several methods of control,..snares, nets, traps and of course,.(for a short while at least)..with the ferrets... The undergrowth is as down as its going to get,.and the vast warrens are open, and visible for all to see.. The numbers taken will not be in the same league as the late September/October regular bumper bundles of 50 and 60 plus ,.but each breeding Doe removed now will definitely stop a place from becoming infested... Different attitudes.... However,.if I was not paid to actively walk out and kill the rabbits,...well,.other than the pups taking them whilst on a quiet Mouch,...I would not bother to hunt them during the Summer... whin 463 Posted February 11, 2010 Report Share Posted February 11, 2010 the summer hare brigade are the worst ones i ve heard guys saying they caut summer hares in long gras i thought big deal, all animals need to breed to reproduce you lok after the land it looks after you, useed to do abit pestcontrol for farmers in summer but hot at times and hard work , but best left to winter , ,take another hobby up in summer and just walk the dogs and let them rest and well there alway summer jobs to do , Quote Link to post
zap 4 Posted February 11, 2010 Report Share Posted February 11, 2010 SEASON? what season this year has been a total f**k up be lucky if we have got out ten nights on the lamp this year november total wash out with rain ground was bottomless so dogs were just sliding around december all that water on the ground froze and ground was to hard nights it did thaw it was to misty could not see 10foot then came the snow 2ft of the stuff 3-4ft where it had drifted and its only just shifted but just to totally f**k things up we got frost back -5 last night and the same expected tonight ,we dont get loads o rabbits when we are out but its the being out wandering around getting a few runs i enjoy ,so as soon as that ground thaws out i will be out i could use the excuse its my bitches first season but no i just want to be out doing what i enjoy Quote Link to post

natter79 17 Posted February 11, 2010 Report Share Posted February 11, 2010 in truth this is my dogs first season and with the weather and his age/experience (lack of it ) it hasn't been great, but i'll still be calling it a day in the next couple of weeks. let the rabbit's have their break until autumn and then away again , having said that if i'm out excersing the dog he will not be reprimanded if he pick's one up (after all it what he was bred/trained for ). atb natter Quote Link to post
