bagzi 0
There were and in some parts of the world still are two reasons for ear cropping one reason was if a Dog was used for Fighting without cropped ears they would be ripped badly in a fight. I can vouch for the other which was to prevent them ripping thier Ears whilst Hunting.I had two imported Cane corso's who were Boar Hunting in Sicily both had Docked Tails and Cropped Ears. It wasn't done for looks as they were Farm Dogs over there. Quote Link to post
YOKEL 2,245
Not all fighting dogs have cropped ears fella, i'd say it's probably 50/50, some like that "mean" look of a cropped dog, others prefer to keep that natural ear which DOES protect the more important inner workings. like i say cropping a dogs ear does nothing to aide him in it's intended role, but each to his own... wetdogsmell 99
croping ears is just for looks, does fukk all else, i heard of a tosser who tryed to crop his adult dogs tail by putting a cable tie on it, dog got an infection strangely enough Quote Link to post
lurchermania 25
It is illegal but for those tits that take badger it would reduce injury in the field. But would reduce hearing for working just forget the idea Quote Link to post
hedz31 1,308
It was a practice carried out mainly in fighting bull blooded dogs many years ago then in some breeds abroad some years ago was accepted as a stantard like tail docking etc for looks purely i have no ideas why people would want to do it to bullx dogs though other than to think it may stop there ears getting torn when taking larger quarry its bloody pointless though a dogs ear is designed to flap over to give protection from muck debris elements affecting the inner ear Quote Link to post
littlefish 586
I don't think that white dogs ears look overly small, I think they are just folded forward close to its head and because its head is black, it is hard to see in the photo. Anyway.....I think everyone agrees.....don't cut your dogs ears off Quote Link to post
watchman 256
ear cropping was quite common in the states, dobermans commonly had this done, purely for looks i think, mind you they also de-claw cats so not all bad Quote Link to post

Bosun11 537
Ear cropping was practiced in the dog fighting world for two reasons, firstly ears can be an easy and painful hold and second, ear bites bleed like feck. It was said that pouring ears would weaken, by bloodloss, the strength in the dog. These days ear cropping is done for asthetic purpose and is a barbaric ritual for any canine to go through, utterly pointless. As for working lurchers (or terriers), ripped and bleeding ears are a fecking pain, especaly when your beloved mutt decides to shake the drips over you, or worse still, your car! Ear rips (or bites) can be stopped quite easily (Foxdropper put a post up yesterday about it, sound advice! ) and I would rather a dog comes home with a drippy ear or two that be constantly shaking its head from the million bits of crap that would fall down the gaping casom that cropped ears would bring whilst in the field, most of which would cause very nasy infection. Edited to add, I don't think that dog in question has had it's ears cropped and I've never seen a bull x that has, nor would I want to!!! Edited February 10, 2010 by Bosun11 Quote Link to post
