ak24_7 0
Good morning all, just to introduce myself, i'm allen and im from NI, i recently bought myself my first dog for the shooting field. He was already part trained with a view for me to take him on and have him ready for the coming shooting season. I'm looking advice on how to get him to stop and listen to direction at a distance, when he's looking at me at a distance he will stop and sit to the whistle, but when i send him for a retrieve he hasn't seen but knows is there he won't look back at me, he will just keep hunting until he finds it, which fairplay to him he always does. when i got him he was already on the dummy launcher, had been running retrieves and was being started on the whistle, and he is very willing to please. many thanks for all your help! Hassle 0
How I got my dog to stop to whistle was by getting her to sit to whistle, so every time I said sit I then blew the whistle once. When she had grasped that in the garden I would then blow the whistle she would sit then I would back away, further each time until I was about 3 meters then walk around her in 360 degrees. Each time returning back and giving praise. I then moved out into the field but after the whistle I would always go to her, after 8 months of doing that I am now starting to work on the get back command. Quote Link to post
troutfly 0
as hassle says but also raise your arm and flat palm as a signal and when he rsponds you can guide him with hand signals also get him on the sit with whistle and hand then thro a dummy right and one left he will intheory go for the last dummy thrown this is where the whistle and the raised hand comes in stop him and send him for the right hand one you are then getting him use to whisle and hand signels and you can also vary the options throw one over his head face him with the raised arm walk backwards ten paces give him the go back command with your arm then pip him back in with the whistle make him sit take the dummy of him and give him loads of praise hope this helps but as alway do it in moderation and get to know the dog hope this helps good luck Quote Link to post

BI9JOHNNY 25
make sure she is 100% solid on the stop command before anything else and try to get into a closed area for training idealy a footpath between 2 lines of fence i always favour this as the dog cannot get away and you can get to the dog quickly to install the stop...remember at the early stages you must pick 9 out of 10 retrieves yourself so as they don't hink everything that drops is there's if you can get it JAMES DOUGLAS done a very good book on gundog training and was a bible for a lot of people atb john Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
You have to start from BASICS to get a dog on stop whistle consistently. At feeding time hold the bowl above his head and give him the sit command. Do not give him the food untill he sits. Slowly, instead of telling him to sit, blow the stop whistle (very quietly as when you blow it hard you want it to mean something!). Start introducing the stop whistle when you are out walking him. Firstly on a lead, then when he is next to you etc. Before you go further, make sure he is 100% and KNOWS what the whistle means. Then start doing it when he is out a wee bit further, then further. Once he is 100%, then and only then should you start thinking about dummies and directions. If he ever disobeys you on the stop whistle, you must go out GRAB him and forceably take him back to the spot he was at when he ignored you and give him the whistle again. Hope this helps, difficult to describe over a computer! FTB Quote Link to post
