my s400 is .177 and i have shot 4 rabbits, 6 pigeons and 4 squizzers with it so far. not one single wound shot. the trajectory of a .177 pellet is very flat but with scope reticles getting better this is soon becomeing not a problem for the .22. i like .177 but everyone has there prefferences. if you want the best of both worlds go for a .20 but there is limited pellet choice in this range. the old saying ".177 for feather and .22 for fur" is tosh. this saying most probably originated in the 50's when all air rifles were spring guns and putting out about 7fibs the .22's greater hitting area would have bben seen as some what of an advantage over the .177 as in those days the chest area was where they aimed for on rabbits and not the head. but the .22 has a loopy trajectory and because the "feather" in those days would be birds like starlings and sparrows the .177 flatter trajectory would be more effective against birds. nowadays a modern airgun is more than accurate enough to kill any quarry speices nomatter what the calibre

Edgar,

Thanks for your reply buddy  ,

Your points are very true buddy and i agree with you 100% ;)

Please don’t think Im a NOOB to shooting though mate as I’ve done a bit of shooting in the past buddy.

All I said is

You will be able to kill humanly with a full power (11.5 FP) .177 to 55 yards if your shooting is up to it pal, and you can put a pellet in the kill area”.

This is a true fact as you admitted yourself. It can defo be done.

If you watch my 8 minute trailer that I am about to post you will see me doing it myself on a lased 52 metre (56.8 yards) jackdaw buddy.

Regarding me saying your gun isnt up to it or you cant shoot. NO  your wrong.

I wouldnt say that pal even though i was already shooting vermin 6 years before you were born, plus i dont even know you pal, so that would be stupid and arrogant of me and im not like that.

In my clip i use a laser range finder to tell me the exact range to the quarry at distance.

The rest i know myself due to lots of range time and working on my shooting.

Regards and no hard feeling buddy ;)

I went to a field yesterday. Shot 3 woody's that you see the feathers all over the place but they fly away. That was at 25m. I am using a Gamo Hunter 440 with VT-1 trigger, 667N GasRam and a Nikko Stirling 4-12x42 scope. I have cronied the gun with AA Fields 8.4gr 4.52 pellets at 780fps. Is it my shooting ability that sucks or does the gun have too little power?

With JSB Exacts 4.52mm 10.5gr pellets it runs a 690fps. I am very dissapointed in my shooting yesterday and I am starting to think about buying a new gun (another...)

Please help,

Roger!

It’s definitely not the rifle Rog.

If you hit the birds and there were feathers all over the place you obviously hit the woodies in the wrong area.

When a woody is facing you, you need to shoot the head, neck or heart for a instant kill.

When a woody is facing away from you, you need to hit the back of the head or between the top of the shoulder blades.

If you miss and hit anywhere else you will most certainly wound the bird causing it distress.

Look at this link that I’ve just put up to help explain what I have just written

Fair enough Zini, no I do not think you are a noob as you put it. I know you use a laser range finder, I don't but 35 yards is my maximum range with my .22 springer, 25 if I'm using the open sights. They are no doubt useful for those long range shots as the quarry is less likely to be spooked so speed is not so important. I wouldn't trust myself to calculate the wind speed because at long range it is going to make a big difference. But the difference is if you have put in the practice and know your gun well as you obviously do then you are less likely to wound than someone who hasn't practiced shooting at half that distance. I liked the 6 years before I was born comment :clapper: No no hard feelings.
