Every dig and end result is different so you have to judge things for yourself on the spot .First thing anyone should do is check the little warrior over and not just the face .A dog that is dug to regular will be immume to fox bites of the puncture variety.Slashes are a different thing though and should be priority clean up.Dirt in the eyes looks bad but is not a priority and can be dealt with when the dog is home .Wasing the dog down with cold water on a cold day can be detrimental and may trigger shock .Far better to clean properly at home with warm water and if the dog is that bad then home is where you should be headed .If a trip to the vets is needed then clean your dog up as best you can at home BEFOREHAND .Offer the dog water after a hard dig but be concerned if it refuses it as shock may be setting in .Get the dog warm fast and electrolyte jabbed if you have one or off to the vets you must go .Commen sense should tell you whether the dog is good for another dig that day .Personally ,i only use antibiotics when absolutely necessary .Your dog will develop immunity to all but the worst bites .May seem harsh and is no reflection on my husbandry ,just what works for me .A syringe or two of salt water at home will cleanse anything combined with cotten wool pads . Warm dry kennel with quality food is essential too .

Heres a tip for bad ear bites .Turn the ear down like a corner of paper ,cover in tissue, and hold it with a cloths peg .Undo when you get home and in most cases the bleeding will have stoppped .Dont leave the peg on !

Spot on, but I use weak dettol instead of salt water. I always keep Fucithalmic eye drops in the truck for when they've worked in sand.

after having a dig 1st clean the earth then if the terriers arnt that bad to the next 1 there seems to b people that want to leave the place like a bomb site an you can go rnd tidying up after socalled terriermen that r f**king up sme good land for me,if the dog as ad some fist then its home for a clean up (salt water)an antiseptic powder ,in extreme cases it heat lamp on an antibiotics over 3 days but dont over do things let there own antibodies do sme graft aswell :boxing:

Thanks for your mixed bag of comments boys.Your quiet right about not always giving anti bio, and as one of you quite rightly said depends on the type of dog you are using i have some bayers and some silly ones. so i ajust accordingly, i also have enough dogs on, to let the others repair properly.Im also lucky enough to be able to take my landrover on site where ever i go so every thing is on board. And i wasnt sugestting that anyone is a bad owner.I was just saying we owe it to them litle dogs to do our best for them. And i no the majority of us do. There was more to the first story, didnt put every thing in,and im sure if you had seen the situation im sure you would have felt the same.So i appologise if i offended anyone it wasnt meant to. Sorry guys

good post lads ,keepem warm ,clean and a nice warm bed that night and plenty of fresh water you shouldnt go far wrong ,shock (foxdropper) is the one to watch out for and im surprised more people didnt mention it . like foxdropper said watch out for tears and especially smaller wounds like feet area and forarms as these if missed and not cleaned will heal quick and trap an infection in side and bang your off .got a lurcher here at moment who nicked her back hock (tiny nick)3 days later and i noticed her back leg was slightly larger than her other .on inspection it had inflamed and was tracking up her leg ,put her on anti,s for 5 days and she,s more or less better a couple more days and i think she,s home dry but i shit myself to be honest and my dogs get the best treatment i can give them ,

antis should only be used when nessacery or when the time comes you need to use them they may not work and a full corse to if you only give three days then the infection might come back then the anti,s youve been using will not work again

I find 9 times out 10 the dogs will clean themselves in the grass once job is done. I walk with dogs all day while out after hounds. So if really bad find nearest stream. Otherwise good wash in dettol when home, good feed and pencillin if really bad. I think as long as dog is clean dry and out of a drought they are half way to recovery already.

I've seen dogs lose their eyes if they weren't cleaned out properly. Not my dogs I hasten to add. I use a plastic syringe minus the needle to clean their eyes: just using lukewarm water once home: if they're really bad I'll use cold water in the field.

Tip for beginners: you need to pull the lower and upper eyelids away from the eye (gently) to flush out the suasages of mud etc from right back under the eyelids: at first glance you may think there's no muck in there but by pulling the eyelids away from the eyeball you can often see a load of muck far back.

Only once had to put a dog on a course of antibiotics: always use dry cow or the equivalent: only about £4 a tube and lasts for ages and with the syringe end you can get deep into the wound. Much better than flooding the dog's system with antibiotics.

MANSPADE YOUR'E FULL OF DUNG, AS HAS BEEN SAID LUCOZADE FOR WOUNDS  . QUICK WASH AND INSPECTION AT THE DIG, DEPENDING ON WHAT THE DOG REQUIRES I CARRY A SOLUTION WITH ME FOR CLEANING, A DUST OF P.E.P AND IF BAD THEN HOME FOR A SHOT OF BETAMOX AND COLVASONE ANTI INFLAMATORY(ALSO PREVENTS SHOCK). KEEP AN EYE ON WOUNDS IF THEY HAVE BEEN CLEANED THOROUGHLY AND PROPER CARE TAKEN WHEN DOIN SO THE DOG WILL NOT NEED A COURSE OF ANTI BIOTICS. TOO MUCH ANTI BIOTICS AND THE DOGS IMMUNE SYSTEM WILL BUILD A RESISTANCE TO THEM RENDERING THEM USELESS WHEN USED. I FIND YOUR ADVICE A BIT PANTS TO BE HONNEST MANSPADE..

Lucosade must surely be a joke?. I doubt you could have used anything worse. Only jab with antibiotics if you really have to. Working terriers have a fantastic immune system, better than most dogs and they do not need a jab everytime. Indeed, too many antibiotics can have serious effects. :victory:

There is no excuse for not ensuring the dog is well after a days work. :victory:

If in doubt, seek a veterinarian... :victory:

i give them a squirt of re charge after a dig which is for greyhounds just mix it weaker, clean eyes with warm water, when i get home i use tcp/dettoll/surgical spirit all mixed together with water in a spray bottle and spray bad wounds 3/4 times a day, this works well for me,i bath them in dynamite which kills all fleas/ticks on the dogs,
