Kelpe Lurchers

I will shortly be taking on a Greyhound/Whippet x Kelpie pup. And although I live in Australia, there doesnt seem to be many people with this kind of Lurcher. I`ve heard that the Kelpie Lurcher is gaining in popularity over in the UK. So I was wondering if any of you guys have such a dog and how do you find them when it comes to work.

a pal of mine has had this breed for a few years now and is always saying how good this breed is.I have seen his bitch work on the lamp and is just as good as any other breed of dog given the right training

This is Maggie my 8 month old kelpie x whippet/grey she has only been out twice and my posts are on here with a description of those events, she is doing very well an exceptionally bright and focused little dog, i have had collie crosses before and i find her harder work she is stubborn and as much as i would like too sometimes you cannot give her a smack because she loses confidence. So its just patience and dont expect to much too soon.

 

Be warned they need socialising with other dogs pretty regularly, she is very sharp with my other dogs and is very wary of strangers. She is fine after a couple of introductions and has never showed any inclination to bite but she grumbles and barks at strangers. ther not bad dogs saw sevral but didnt rate them any better thab some of the collie type ive had or saw ,but they are nice little dogs some were to heavy for me not enough pace and agility o fast qaurry

i have one bullcat, mines kelpie/grey x whipp/grey , so mines just 1/4 kelpie. her good points are , good feet , good staminar, very agile , very quik turn of pace.

 

se can be funny with some dogs, and absolutly hates terriers. she is very clever and works out all maner of things, opening doors all that kind of stuff.

The problem with comparing kelpie lurchers in the UK to collie crosses is that some also have collie blood but this is conveniently dropped from their description in the same way that many beardie/border lurchers are referred to as beardie lurchers. I'm not saying that either is better but a pedigree that's only partly true can cause confusion.

GOOD point neal and to be honest i cant see why people do that collie kelpie thing,

personly think its just to add the merle colouring. i know dave sliaght did the collie x kelpie.

 

i personly feel if you want to find out how a kelpie cross difers from a collie theres no point in adding collie

Good point Tomo. My first kelpie blooded dog was kelpie/collie greyhound bred by Dave Sleight and I was so impressed by him I bought a pure one and haven't looked back since. However, although the dog was great, that could just as easily have come from the collie side as the kelpie as I've heard good things about the collie line he used. Ironically, I came really close to getting a pure kelpie before the lurcher as I was so interested in them but talked myself out of it. You live and learn.

mine was a very gentle sadly he was blind in 1 eye which limited him the bloke i brought him from had never even took him out of the kennel i put alot of time into him an he turned out a good dog i would love another 1 but not many about

i saw several kelpie crosses and the old d slieght colie type i have them justmade them my own , some were nice but saw few not racy to be handy to one dimensional qaurry wise but they were sturdy dogs
