Flushing with Plummers

Recommended Posts

The plan was to get to Browners for Saturday morning, check a few earths on the estate, get back to his, get pissed and go ratting following day with the cavalry. Well rest asure we wasn`t disapointed, what a weekend. Me, Phil, Browner,Stuart and Adge with 8 Plummers. We drew up a wood with a gun at the end proved fruitless, so off to the next wood which had an earth which regularly holds. A good opportunity to try young dogs with little or no experience. Dogs collared up and on leads we aproached the earth in a stealthy fashion. Two guns in position we slipped Lucy, a 2 year old bitch belonging to Phil with no earth work under her belt. She nosed the holes and made half hearted attempts in entering into 3 different entrances, a little unsure of herself. We gave her a few minutes before putting her back on the lead. Bo was the next to try, owned by Adge 3year old bitch also untried, with pretty much with same response. Meanwhile my three was pulling like hell on their leads with their heads cocked to one side indicating there was definately something home. Bo back on the lead we let Joy slip, my bitch 18 month old with a couple of foxes under her belt to date. She shot straight in with no hesitation, 5 minutes passed before we heard her constant baying and mixing, we waited a few minutes before we located to be sure of a fixed position. Located her 5ft deep and lost her as they moved on. Sure enough the dog fox bolted and a quick response from Browner dropped the fox 15 yards from the earth with his shotgun. By this time Lucy was doing cartwheels on the end of the lead, she was well keyed up. Knowing there may be a vixen in there we put Joy back on the lead and let Lucy have another look. This time there was no hesitation, straight in. After a couple of minutes it was obvious she had found judging by the racket going on in there. A couple more minutes and the vixen bolted to Browners left with Lucy hot on its heals, waiting for the fox to get distance from the bitch through low brambles, through a fence onto a sloping grass field, Browner waited patiently before pulling the trigger to down the fox with accuracy from a good distance. Congratulations and praise was exchanged between us on how this was managed between us in a profesional manner. Pest control at its best. A couple of more earths were tried to no avail but that didnt matter as we were well happy and on a high with the first encounter. A bonus rat and 3 rabbits caught with the terriers topped it off on the return to the vehicles ended a good day. As indicated by the title `text book` was not quite true as I had lost Browners leads from my pocket. Tracing back the steps we soon found them. Then to top that off I left my wellies when I changed back at the car, I wouldnt mind but they weren`t cheap, ah well, still, it was worth it. Back to Browners, showered and changed ready for Indian resturant and a few bevies joined by Codger. As you guessed it conversations were had about the days events and plans were made for the next days ratting, watch this space and I`ll tell you about that when I sort out photo`s shortly.
