at the end of the day, just go out and try, all the formations are just examples of what have worked for other people, they may, or may not work for you, maybe start off with a basic U shape, put the bouncers at the ends, as if they were pidgeons coming into land, you'll want the curve of the U around 25yds away from your hide, but again, these are just examples that have worked for me, once your out in the field and trying patterns out, you'll find one that in your eye's, brings the birds in, and you'll tend to stick to that, until you have a bad day, then try another, I started with 12 decoys, and a magnet, adding shot pidgeons to the pattern helps too

just go out and enjoy

i use a u/v/j or just a clump of brids when the others wont work. bouncers i put in lee of the pattern facing the wind( as a pigeon would land). i have made lofting hooks which i put facing the pattern of as many deeks as i have(currently 30) plus dead birds.

if using a u/j/v then put the lead bird into the wind( i will normally put a few birds "sideways on" but not with their backs to the wind( never see pigeon getting ruffled by the wind).

lord knows i'm no expert but rarely blank :whistling:

its all trial and error at the end of the day bud. if birds shy or jink then something is wrong in the pattern or they can see you or something in the hide moving/shining( the germans say a pigeon has an eye on each feather!!!)

the best of luck mate

All of the above are true, a friend of mine never uses any pattern though and he shoots just as many as me, when i spend time setting "classic" paterns. One thing my friend and i do agree on though is that all the birds in the formation must face into the general direction of the wind and never away. :gunsmilie: Happy shooting mate!!!
