Sudays digging

Recommended Posts

Yesterday saw us on our first propper digging outing of the year ,it being the first available day after the shooting season . Most of you will be thinking about rapping it up now on charlie but im afraid this is pest control pure and simple .With that squarely in mind you can read on as this is not about future sport .We started at 10 am and tried 17 places without so much as a tug on the lead .We parked up near to a hanging with 3 good places at approx' 2pm and used my bitch to try for a mark . The first two were rabbity so the last one really was last knockings . A strong mark got us excited and my mates small pat bitch was entered as shes seen nothing for a while.

This place is a 3 eyed earth on a steep bank ,2 holes close together with another about 15m away to the left .It was originally a rabbit place but was enlarged about 3 year ago .Anyway ,got a mark of 2.3 m which anywhere else wouldnt be a problem but here on this banking we knew it was going to be hard graft .Hard graft on us and a test for any dog.

Started a hole at 2.20pm and that was us for the next 4 1/2 hours ,finishing well into dark.Root aplenty but mainly sand .

At 1.2 we hit the rock and the bar was brought forward .Chip ,shovel ,repeat for 900 mm and 2 hours later, back to sand with a breakthrough spot on at 8pm.The work wasnt over though as the fox had fanged the dogs bottem jaw propper .A bit of careful manouvering had them apart and the fox was duly shot .A very heavy vixen with not long to go by the feel of her . Pest control pure and simple .
