got a grey here , been working him , doing very well , lovely dog to have around , but he hurt his inside toe in the snow , common injury place in running dogs esp greys , been getting better even up to doing approx 5 miles behind jeep again , sound but swollen , took him to a show yesterday , stood around for 7 hrs and got a bit sore after that time but as i was going to vets today i had hiom checked out , it is looking like bone cancer !!!!!!!! the lump that looked like a small swelling between toes is thought to be the tumour , brought on by the injury ??? the foreign vet says this is fairly common to get these tumours between toes in running dogs??? ive never heard of it , have any of you ? thanks

Bloody shame mate, sick for you. My 8 yo bitch had it in her front right ankle joint and I had to have her put down last year. ATB D.

Sorry to hear your bad news mate, I had a bull cross until june last year, she got bumped by a car, took her to the vets and she seemed fine just a few scrapes, after 2 weeks she was still limping slightly, took her back to the vets and they x-rayed her front leg, they showed me the x-ray, looked like a white orb round her front leg, vet told me it was bone cancer.....couldn't believe it!

 

I had the option to take her leg off or leave it, life expectancy wasn't much different with leg on or off, said she had between 2 to 6 mths, she went to sleep for ever exactly 2mths to the day of being diagnosed, within those 2 months it was in her back legs and she couldn't hardly walk, vet said that considering the breed, age & position of the cancer, he thought it was the most aggresive form a bone cancer a dog could get, it turned out he was right, she was 10yrs old, gutted me, i've only just got another pup in the last few weeks.

the vet was telling me that its common in greys and heavy grey based lurchers????? i havent heard of it but after researching on the net whilst awaiting results yes it seems it is common , they get an injury , we presume some kind of bone injury such a a fracture or dislocation , and after a few weeks the results come back as cancer!!!!!!!!!! the little lump in between his toes is still thought to be a tumour either benign or malignant , im awaiting lab results , the good news is she doesnt think its gone up the leg and is localised , so fingers crossed , ive looked at the xrays with the vet and there is def a change in the bone which is not a fracture break of any kind ? i will keep you informed as may just help another dog some day

One of my border collies (good rabbiting dog) got took to the vets, he had a swollen ankle which was causing concern. My mother phoned me and said the vet believed him to have cancer within the ankle and that she should consider her options...have him put down now or wait a little while. My mother said to me that she was going to get a second opinion from a different vets. I said surely they know their job. Anyway she spends some more money at another vets to find out it was just arthritis, vet said that cancer can't spread across the joint. Anyway Jet the border collie lived for a good few more years. I felt sick when i found out.....and was so happy that my mother did seek a second opinion at a different vets. ATB

what usually happens is that the bone disintegrates gradually, and eventually completely gives out. At that point you hve a decision to make. ive had it in a hound and had the leg taken off......I wouldnt do it again I have to say, although he did have another 12 months, most of it happily working, he was the exception in terms of ability and temperament to deal with the situation.

A second opinion is good advice. If there is a veterinary oncologist around you. That would be a good vet. to see.

i will do all i can to ensure he is kept fit and well and all avenues explored , but i will not put him through surgery which will just prolong ,he deserves dignity , sad as it seems, i am enjoying every second of running a pure grey and all the pitfalls that come with it , and you know when there is just that something special about a dog, well he is that something special , special needs at times being such a twit but special all the same
