Hide Tanning

ok boys and girls...i want to start tanning hides.

 

from fox throught o red deer...and eventually bison!!! as i know some one who farms them!

 

can anyone please help me with and home tanning guide or where i shuld look to get started?

Attlebrough accesories do a tanning kit !

I have done fallow but its a lot of work if i wanted another hide tanning i would get it done at a tannery . There was an add in ST about a place that do them i think it was down south .

From what little I know of it, I understand that because the fur (pins) on a deer are hollow, they have a tendency to break off (become brittle) if constantly walked upon as in a mat. To keep them tip top best to hang them on a wall.

I successfully made a traditional buckskin from a roe deer hide last year. I followed the very clear instructions in the book " Deerskins into Buckskins (How to tan with brains, soap or eggs)" by Matt Richards. ( I used eggs ).There is also a excellent dvd of the same name. if its any help theres an artical in this months Air Gunner about how to do rabbit pelts....cant be much different just on a smaller scale, hope this helps!
