dug twelve foot in made up siol and hard core with helpers hard going but thats a good dig , but not to safe ,the siol looks dry enough tho

Spot on.

The reading is lower because you are closer to the side of the dog, not necesarilly on top. Locating on steep banks takes alot of practice, and a fair degree of judgement.
